Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Enemy, Riley
"It's you!"
Lynn blurted out, and the young man delivering the items was also taken aback, clearly not expecting to run into the guy who had killed Ross.
In truth, Lynn didn't harbor much hostility toward this young man or the other apprentice who had come with him.
After all, he had only fought a life-and-death battle with Ross, while the other two had been assigned tasks elsewhere.
Lynn hadn't actively sought them out today, merely out of cautious defense. Ross had killed over twenty examinees, and it was clear that the other two also had blood on their hands.
But now, seeing this young man before him, Lynn's mind began to stir with ideas.
He wanted to seize this opportunity for a detailed conversation because he urgently needed information about Ross.
Although Lynn had emerged victorious in the life-and-death duel, Ross's backer clearly wouldn't let things slide.
Today's near-transfer to the Alchemy Department was the result of their intervention.
Yet, Lynn knew almost nothing about Ross's background.
Lynn took a deep breath, forced a smile, and softened his tone:
"It seems we're quite fated to meet… Please, come in. By the way, I'm Lynn. What should I call you?"
He opened the door wider, gesturing for the other to enter.
At the moment, both of them were apprentices in the Furnace, working in the potion garden. They had no direct grievances, and there might be many interactions between them in the future.
"Remi. My name is Remi."
The young man seemed to understand this logic as well. He nodded, introduced himself, and carried the items into Lynn's room.
As the door gently closed behind them, the atmosphere between the two eased considerably.
"You want to ask about Ross, don't you? His background and where he was headed after entering the Furnace?"
Remi paused briefly, as if guessing Lynn's intentions, then spoke up.
"My relationship with Ross wasn't that great. We were just acquaintances. He did mention some things to me, like how he planned to join the Alchemy Department after entering the Furnace to find his cousin. As for his cousin's name, it should be Riley Robert…"
"Riley Robert…" Lynn repeated softly, nodding thoughtfully. "Thank you."
For the next while, Lynn and Remi chatted at length, exchanging their thoughts on the potion garden and the inner workings of the Furnace.
As the conversation gradually wound down, Lynn stood up, opened the door, and smiled as he saw Remi out.
Watching Remi leave, the smile on Lynn's face slowly faded.
Lynn sat back down on the bed, his mind swirling with thoughts.
"Riley Robert… I'll find a chance to ask Colin to help me investigate his background."
At the very least, he now knew who the hidden enemy was, which gave him some peace of mind.
He let out a long breath and turned his gaze to the window.
By now, the sun had completely sunk below the horizon, and the night had grown thick, with scattered stars dotting the sky.
"I slept the entire afternoon… I'll grab something to eat first, then carefully study today's gains. Especially what Teacher mentioned about 'natural wizards' and that 'life seed.'"
Lynn pulled out a few pieces of bread that Colin had stuffed into his hands earlier. He nibbled on the bread and drank some water, filling his stomach hastily.
Afterward, he checked to make sure the door was securely closed, then sat down at the desk by the window, neatly arranging the three books his teacher had left for him.
He was ready to dive into the contents of the books.
The first book, The Travels of Life, was a travelogue written by a natural wizard.
This book recorded the adventures of a wizard exploring various parts of the world, filled with vivid descriptions of landscapes and cultures, reading more like a literary work.
The second book, Introduction to Natural Wizards, and the third, From Nature Novice to Lord of the Earth, were more serious foundational texts, detailing the introductory knowledge and advanced paths of natural wizards.
However, Lynn was well aware that he wasn't yet a true natural wizard.
Whether it was elemental wizards, bloodline wizards, summoning wizards, or natural wizards, the common prerequisite was first becoming a formal wizard.
Lynn was currently just a wizard apprentice.
Within the Furnace, the path to advancement for apprentices was largely similar:
Elemental wizard apprentices needed to continuously improve their mental power through meditation, advancing from first-level apprentice to second-level, then third-level, and finally striving to become a formal wizard.
Bloodline wizards, while improving their mental power, also needed to fuse with special bloodlines to enhance their strength.
As for natural wizards, their path was even more unique, revolving almost entirely around the "life seed."
Lynn touched his brow, where the life seed, Yfgríd, resided within his mental domain.
As he continued flipping through the books, his frown deepened.
The growth path of a natural wizard, aside from improving mental power, required establishing a deep connection with this life seed.
He had to infuse it with his mental power, leaving his imprint.
Next came the long process of nurturing.
He needed to continuously nourish the life seed with his mental power until it was full of vitality and began to sprout.
During this period, the life seed would consume the majority of his mental resources.
Assuming Lynn's total mental power was 100, at least 80% of it -80 points- would have to be dedicated to maintaining the growth of the life seed.
This meant that in daily use of spells, he could only utilize less than 20% of his mental power!
"No wonder a Teacher always says her students have poor combat ability…"
Lynn rubbed his brow, a wry smile appearing on his face.
"So that's why. Natural wizard apprentices do have low combat strength."
He finally understood the reason.
On the long path from first-level wizard apprentice to formal wizard,
natural wizards needed to dedicate 80% of their mental power to nurturing the life seed, leaving only 20% far from enough to sustain high-intensity combat.
"Such a long development period… I hope this life seed and the path of the natural wizard won't disappoint me."
Despite his words, a hint of doubt arose in Lynn's mind.
During his earlier conversation with Remi, his "classmate," he had more or less inquired about the research and study directions of black wizards.
Compared to other wizard categories, the cultivation methods of natural wizards seemed out of place, even somewhat incompatible with the "style" of black wizards.
Black wizards typically favored spells that were quick to take effect and highly destructive, such as the straightforward and powerful elemental wizards or the cold, highly lethal necromancers.
And natural wizards?
In the early stages, they had almost no combat ability. Choosing this path as a black wizard was practically suicidal.
"Perhaps… this path was originally meant for the world of white wizards."
Lynn sighed softly, then shook his head, pushing aside his wandering thoughts and distractions.
He knew very well that, whether the path of the natural wizard suited him or not, there was no turning back now.
Moreover, he was in the Furnace, dominated by black wizards. Adapting to the environment and improving his strength were the keys to survival.
"Instead of overthinking, I should focus on studying more about natural wizards…"
With this thought, Lynn turned his attention back to the books in his hands and continued reading.
