Chapter 9: Chapter 9: Colin’s Teacher
"Teacher."
Standing in front of the flower-filled courtyard, Colin didn't enter rashly but instead called out softly.
Lynn stood to the side, still observing the small courtyard, when he suddenly noticed the flowers around him swaying gently.
There wasn't a hint of wind, yet the flowers seemed to come alive, trembling slightly as if responding to Colin's call.
A few moments later, the flowers swayed again, and this time, a gentle woman's voice emerged:
"Come in, Colin, and the little one beside you."
After receiving the response, Colin stepped into the courtyard, and Lynn naturally didn't dare to delay, quickly following behind him.
Passing through the courtyard, they soon entered the hall on the first floor.
The hall was bathed in sunlight, the air filled with a faint floral fragrance, and the carefully arranged flowers gave the space an elegant charm.
In the warm, soft sunlight, a woman in a wizard's robe stood among the flowers, holding a watering can and tending to the plants.
The woman appeared to be in her early thirties, with a slender figure and golden hair loosely draped over her shoulders. Her features exuded intelligence and grace.
A faint smile always lingered on her lips, giving her a gentle demeanor that completely contradicted Lynn's mental image of a "black wizard."
Hearing the footsteps, the woman looked up, her deep blue eyes as mesmerizing as the ocean.
She glanced at Colin and smiled, saying, "What brings you to your teacher today? And who is this little one…"
"Teacher, this is a new apprentice who just passed the trial. He's a 'complete newcomer'! I think he might meet your requirements."
Colin scratched his head, grinning as he walked to the woman's side and whispered.
Lynn, meanwhile, stood carefully in place, not daring to be the slightest bit disrespectful.
He understood that this seemingly gentle and intelligent woman was no ordinary figure. As a member of the black wizards, her gentle appearance was likely just a facade, and her true strength and methods were far beyond his comprehension.
"Hmm?" The woman frowned slightly, seeming puzzled. "When did the Furnace start a war? Is it already time for a large-scale recruitment of apprentices?"
"Not yet, Teacher."
Colin quickly shook his head and explained, "This trial wasn't for recruiting for a Furnace war. This 'complete newcomer' fought his way out of a group of connected individuals. He's clever and has decent strength."
"Oh?"
The woman drew out her tone, her gaze returning to Lynn. Those deep blue eyes seemed to pierce through everything, carrying a hint of amusement.
She was intrigued by Lynn's ability to fight his way out of a trial dominated by connected individuals.
"In that case," the woman nodded, then turned back to Colin and asked softly, "But have you explained everything clearly to this little one?"
"I did, I did."
Colin quickly lowered his head, though he still seemed a bit guilty, his voice softening. "No matter what, he'll agree."
The woman gave Colin a faint glance, her gaze seemingly able to see through his thoughts, causing Colin to lower his head further.
Then, she turned to Lynn, a calm smile on her face, and asked in a steady tone, "Is that so?"
Her gaze fell on Lynn, those deep blue eyes so bright they seemed to captivate souls. Paired with her flawless features, they exuded a sense of awe-inspiring pressure.
Lynn felt his heart tighten, not daring to meet her eyes, and quickly lowered his head, saying:
"Yes, Lord Colin has already explained it to me."
"Fine, always playing little tricks."
The woman chuckled softly, extending a slender finger to tap Colin's forehead, her tone carrying a mix of exasperation and fondness.
Then, she turned to Lynn, her expression becoming slightly more serious:
"Little one, since you're a complete newcomer, I'll make this simple and clear."
She paused briefly before continuing:
"I need a complete newcomer with talent to become my apprentice. But what I teach is different from other wizards after becoming my apprentice, you might find that for a long time, you won't have the ability to fight other wizard apprentices. In a place like the Furnace, this could be very dangerous. Are you sure you want to become my apprentice?"
She paused again, her gaze deep as she looked at Lynn, then added:
"If you've truly thought it through, we'll proceed with the trial. Otherwise, let's not waste each other's time."
"No ability to fight?"
Hearing this, Lynn recalled Colin's earlier joke"I can't fight their backer, so I can't help you."
He had thought Colin was being modest, but now it seemed the wizard's straightforward words were most likely true.
In the Furnace of the black wizards, lacking combat ability was not a good thing.
But for Lynn, he had no other choice at the moment.
Becoming a wizard's apprentice was no easy feat within the Furnace.
Even those who passed the trial and were assigned to different departments rarely had the opportunity to receive direct guidance from a wizard.
Moreover, Lynn knew very well that following this wizard might bring future dangers, but those dangers were still far off.
If he rejected this opportunity, Ross's backer would find him, and that would mean certain death.
In comparison, the wizard's offer was undoubtedly his only hope for survival.
Without hesitation, Lynn looked up and said firmly:
"Yes, ma'am, I've thought it through."
The woman didn't seem surprised by his answer. She smiled faintly and said:
"Alright, then let's begin the trial. Relax. Do you see this flower?"
Her voice was gentle and calm, yet it carried a strange, mesmerizing power that left Lynn feeling dazed, his mind growing foggy.
Even as a First-Level Apprentice Wizard, he was like a child in front of a true wizard, utterly defenseless.
In Colin's view, the wooden floor beneath Lynn began to change.
Originally smooth, the floor now sprouted colorful flowers of various kinds, each seemingly brimming with life and spirit.
The flowers swayed gently, as if with their own will, climbing and spreading along Lynn's body until they completely enveloped him.
Lynn was wrapped in a cocoon-like structure of flowers, the floral fragrance surrounding him, the air filled with an eerie yet intoxicating aura.
The beautiful teacher tilted her head slightly, her slender, jade-like fingers lightly tapping her chin as she mused:
"Talent-wise… above average. That's to be expected. Truly top-tier apprentices are sent directly to the higher-ups during the initial screening. Passing the trial is already quite good."
She raised an eyebrow slightly, as if remembering something, and her gaze fell on Lynn:
"Hmm? A First-Level Apprentice Wizard? A complete newcomer? Let me see…"
As soon as she finished speaking, ripples of deep blue appeared in her eyes, as if an invisible force was penetrating Lynn's memories.
Lynn felt a slight sting in his head, but it quickly subsided.
He didn't realize that his surface-level memories were being rapidly scanned by the wizard.
From childhood to the present, the scenes of Lynn's life flashed by.
Of course, only the most superficial layer of his memories.
Many deeply buried pieces of information remained undiscovered. Even a full-fledged wizard couldn't remotely access all of Lynn's memories without casting a spell.
But that wasn't necessary. The beautiful wizard simply wanted a quick overview.
"Hmm… truly untouched by the world of wizards," the teacher murmured, a hint of curiosity in her tone. "It seems you're either naturally gifted or have had some special opportunity."
Her eyes showed a flicker of interest, and she added:
"However, talent is just the foundation. There's one final and most important test seed affinity."
With that, she raised her hand. Her slender, delicate fingers, which should have inspired tenderness, now began to undergo a strange transformation.
The soft pink skin was gradually replaced by emerald-green vines, which coiled and intertwined as if alive, eventually forming a circular disk.
Within the disk, hundreds of seeds were neatly arranged, each emitting a faint energy pulse.
"Hmm?"
The teacher looked down at the disk, her expression initially calm and composed. But soon, a trace of surprise appeared on her face. "There's a reaction? Wait… how is this possible? Every seed is reacting?"
Her eyes widened abruptly, her deep blue pupils filled with shock and disbelief.
Even a wizard of her caliber couldn't hide her astonishment.
