Chapter 47: TST [47]
No one was surprised by Team Predator's bid. After all, the club was known for recruiting only female duelists.
It was practically overflowing with beautiful women—a dream destination for many male duelists.
Maybe they weren't that interested in the mysterious duelist at first. But now that it was confirmed she was female, there was no way they were letting this go.
They hadn't had notable results in years. While they had some promising newcomers, compared to other top clubs, the gap was still significant.
A strong female duelist was exactly what they had been dreaming of.
"A hundred million? Are you trying to kill the rest of us?!"
"If I remember right, that's all of Team Predator's liquid funds, isn't it? Just to buy some duelist info?"
"It's my damn money. Who asked for your opinion? If you've got the guts, outbid me!"
"You…"
Silence fell. Everyone seemed to be contacting their higher-ups or investors. After all, this was a price none of them could approve on their own.
The auction entered a pause.
Milo sat at his computer, torn.
Should he call in investors and go all-in to get the duelist's info? Or gamble on his own investigation and hope to find a lead?
He had made some progress at Duel Academy's Middle Division earlier, but hadn't found what he truly needed.
Now, with the leaked info confirming the duelist was a girl, he could narrow the range again. Maybe, just maybe, he could find her by elimination and save the money.
But that would take time—something he didn't have.
The auction break was only ten minutes, and Team Predator clearly wouldn't raise the price further.
Once they got the intel, they'd immediately go recruit the mysterious duelist.
Then what? Compete head-to-head with Team Predator?
Probably what the other clubs were thinking, too. A brawl was inevitable.
That said, honestly, Milo despised the idea of profiting off someone else's personal info.
He sighed deeply and lifted his teacup, about to take a sip—when his assistant rushed in, face grim.
"Boss, urgent news. A core member of Team Beast has gone missing!"
"Missing?"
Milo blinked, then waved it off irritably.
"Tch. With the tournament coming up, he's probably out partying somewhere and passed out in a ditch. The cops will find him. How many times has this happened before…"
"Traces of a Shadow Duelist were found at the scene."
The assistant said flatly.
Clang—
The teacup fell from Milo's hand, shattering on the floor. Tea splashed everywhere.
He turned to his assistant in disbelief, terror spreading across his face.
"What did you say? Are you sure?"
"The appraisal came from a League-certified examiner. One of your old friends."
The assistant adjusted his glasses and handed over a report. Seeing the signature, Milo shut his eyes with a sigh, collapsing back into his chair.
It seemed the Shadow Duelists were indeed back.
But so soon? Hadn't it only been a few years?
Back when Milo debuted as a pro, he was a rising star. He thought he'd be recruited by a top club and reach the pinnacle.
Instead, the ones who found him first were the Shadow Duelists.
He knew the risks. Losing to a Shadow Duelist meant being dragged into darkness, becoming one of them. However, he was arrogant then, confident in his skills. So he accepted the duel.
Utter defeat!
It was the worst loss of his life… he couldn't fight back at all, completely toyed with.
His confidence and courage were shattered. He even considered quitting dueling altogether.
Luckily, just before he was pulled into the darkness, the Duel King appeared, defeated the Shadow Duelist, and saved him.
That was Milo's first time seeing the Duel King.
And the most vivid detail was the one Morgan had described: that colorful, torch-like hairstyle.
It sounded abstract, but to Milo back then, it felt strangely comforting.
"So what's the League going to do about this? Stopping the tournament might be the best choice."
Milo took a deep breath. The Shadow Duelists recruited strong duelists by force. They were clearly targeting league participants.
"The League's official stance is... to keep it quiet. The tournament will proceed as planned."
The assistant paused before delivering the verdict.
"What?!"
Milo slammed his hand on the desk.
"Do they even know what they're doing?! There could be Shadow Duelists already mixed into the league! We need to conduct a full investigation!"
He stood, throwing on the black coat draped over his chair.
"Get me a meeting with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Now."
The assistant nodded fast and pulled out his phone.
Just then, Milo remembered the auction and turned to his screen.
But it was too late.
The auction had been shut down. Even the original leak post was gone—apparently deleted in a rush.
