Chapter 7: 6: Revaluation crisis
Faint beeps echoed through Maya's mind, a recollection of her previous life as she drowned further into her subconscious. Trying to figure out who she left behind. The warmth of his soft hands against hers. He's voice cracking at the very sight of her demise. Her soul writhed and churned at the prospect of it all which awoke her to a hospital wing. But she knew it was no ordinary wing, her head tilted on one side of the bed, a holographic panel showing her vitals readings as the numbers were steady. Atleast there was no beeping to send her back into turmoil. She tried rising up but her body wouldn't allow it.
"Don't bother trying to unless you wanna pass out again." A voice said across from her. She slumped back down her vision still detoriated but could tell under the cold harshness of the voice that spoke to her.
"What do you want me do then, wallow?" She said lifting her hand above head.
"How long was I unconscious?"
"8 hours which is surprisingly short. Most take 12 or atleast a day trying to recover." He said. She sighed and looked at Yama, his back to the wall, he's eyes still cold as ever, the snake tattoos rattling on his neck but something felt off about him atleast to Maya that is.
"Where are we?" She asked looking around seeing multiple beds along a never ending pathway.
"We are home. Mundus." He said placing his hands in his long coat pockets as he walked towards her bedside. Her vision became fractionally clearer as the details finally gave way to her eyes. Creations of all kind roamed through the hall they were in. The nurses taking care of the injured breachers laying on their beds, others reuniting with lost comrades and a symphony of muttering that echoed thoughout the entire building. Maya felt mesmerized at such a view she had never once thought this how most breachers associate with each other. Atleast on the surface.
"Technically we are not at the heart of Mundus but we are atop it." A soft voice said as Yama hissed under his breath and Maya looked up at Freya's figure once again. Ambiant with her navy blue dress and pulsing gold sigils around her she still looked elegant as ever.
"I don't believe we've meet properly, my name is Freya. I've heard so much about you little girl." She said, a smile that held nothing but truth formed. Maya hesitantly beckoned.
"What about me I mean am just a nobody." Her hands intertwining with each other. Freya lightly closed her eyes.
"Do you see each person here? They are not here because they were nobodies, The Great Omniscient Deity saw potential in each and every one of them. Gave them gifts, now they fight for his will, they never falter even in the face of darkness. We are meant for something great no matter how small we may think we are." She said staring out the huge panelled glass surrounding the ward.
"Fate has a way around it's course, I believe yours will be something extraordinary." She said smiling at her. The warmth of her smile lightly made Maya blush while Yama just rolled his eyes.
"But first, you must prove yourself where your place in this war should be." She said her smile fading.
"What do you mean prove myself? I thought that when we first carry out our first breach assignment we are all breachers?" She asked puzzled.
"Each Breacher has a role in this great war. It's all about finding your potential. Only G.O.D knows who fits each role as you'll see during the sessions." She said slowly pacing.
"So when do these sessions begin Lady Freya?" She asked. Freya turned a glint of satisfaction shimmered in her eyes at that reply as she spoke.
"A day from now, they are held everyday depending on how many souls revert to becoming breachers. So rest, me and Yama have other things to take care of."
"We do?" He asked, lifting his brows as his snakes hissed.
"Yes we do." She said this time the smile held potent dissatisfaction. Yama could sense it and let out a sigh. He walked besides Freya and led her to the door. Before they left, Maya shouted her name.
"Maya."
They both turned their heads.
"My name is Maya. And now I see everything." She said with courage filling inside her. Yama lightly smirked as Freya nodded soflty as they both left her in the ward.
As the next day beckoned, Maya rose feeling energized and back to full health. The nurse carried out rehabilitation tests to ensure her safety afterwards she was preparing to leave until a voice stopped her in her tracks. A girl with short blonde hair, hazel eyes and wearing a full on white body tight sought her attention.
"Ummm.... excuse me are you gonna take the test as well?" She asked. Maya first looked at the girl before speaking.
"Yes, is there something you'd want to know?"
"Actually there is. Though I doubt you'll consider it." She said her eyes darting from side to side. Maya noticed and kept her intrusive thoughts to herself.
"You haven't asked yet so I don't know whether your wasting my time or..."
"No! Don't get me wrong all I want is to team up with you for the test that's all." She said finally making eye contact with her before her eyes stared somewhere else. Maya let out a breath and lightly smiled.
"Sure why not." The girl's face lit up as she smiled back and held out her hand.
"Am Daisy, nice to meet you." Maya took her hand and shook it.
"Nice to meet you Daisy, am Maya." She said. As they walked towards the waiting area for the test partakers alot of new breachers were on ground talking to each other.
"It seems more crowded than I expected." Maya said looking around at the mass of people there.
"Oh there tends to be more, this is just one small test area." Daisy said. Maya didn't look a bit fazed by it but somehow collected. She knew in a day atleast not more than a few hundred thousand souls end up becoming breachers and that would mean not all of them may fit on one big area. As she solidly thought of the possibilities of other test areas, a guy bumped into her.
"Hey watch it." She said
"Want me to say sorry, no way." He said scoffing as he walked off.
"I guess being a jerk is a still a thing even in the after life." Maya said brushing her shoulder.
"Yeah most if they have awakened sight." She said.
"You seem to know alot than your telling me Daisy." Maya asked quizzically. Daisy's eyes stopped darting for a moment and we're still before facing her.
"Am just assuming from what I asked the nurses." She said hesitantly. Maya let it go and looked the other way as a figure walked from beyond the crowd. He's hair long and blonde, he's eyes a reflection of the sun. He's demeanor said it all as he stood at a raised platform.
"Welcome, gathered souls. My name is Alucard. And I'll be your supervisor for the test you'll be carrying out today. A total of 1000 breachers will enter and there are three tests to prove one's resolve for this war. The tests of Faith, Hope and Belief. Each harder than the last, the 500 breachers who make it until become fully fledged breachers." He said.
"What about those who don't pass the test, what will happen to them?" A boy asked.
"Those who fail any one of the three will be sent back for eternal slumber awaiting for the war to end." He said. A condensed murmur ran throughout the entire room. Maya didn't like the thought of losing and she wouldn't be surprised by the turmoil going on. It was all about survival from the very beginning. Some breachers scoffed and left the area, others not knowing what to do just trembled down in fear.
"You've gotta be joking?!!!" A boy shouted. Everyone including Maya turned over to see who shouted and she realised it's the same guy who bumped into her. He walked, anger fuming every step he made as he faced Alucard. No expression changed from his calm face.
"Did I say something wrong?" He said.
"Something wrong? Your saying that no matter what we have to pass without failing. Why weren't we given this information before?" He asked. Alucard sighed and just lightly opened his eyes. The pressure he released was so menacing and enticing Maya felt her gift resonant in response. Alucard looked up and looked in her direction. Like as if he'd recognized her presence and looked somewhere else as the boy below felt fear surging through him.
"Don't question something you made a decision for just because you weren't told." He said clapping his hands as the floor lit up in a bright yellow hue. Everyone stared down as the floor became brighter.
"If all who are within the light are willing to take the test, prepare yourselves." He said.
No one moved as he looked around and smiled.
"May the first test begin. May your faith be with G.O.D." he said clapping again as the floor disappeared and they were all mid air hundreds of feet above a desolated jungle area.
