Chapter 47: Ch. 47 Magnus’ thoughts
Seeing Magnus' Hodge for the first time it was nothing like Galileo remembered, and at a glance he could safely say it was bigger and better than the capital. Passing over the city he saw it was much more modern looking too with skyscrapers, street cars, public housing, even sewers systems and even a magically charged electrical grid. There was a larger population as well but there was far less poverty. The overall standard of living was higher. The way people dressed still told that there was a difference in classes, but no one was actually poor. The worst off had at least the basic necessities and amenities, while there were still those living more lavishly than in the capital. For that matter, the standard of power was higher than in the capital as well. Ninja roamed to and fro across the rooftops, while swordsmen patrolled the streets aiding where needed. All with grimoires as well. The common villagers had a degree of basic training and education from the academy. There was a strong sense of community ingrained in the people as everyone was quick to help one another make the city work. Not only was Galileo impressed with quality of the village life, but Magnus captured the hidden leaf's aesthetic very well, while still making it his own. Where the church should have been stood a great academy with a large training area out front, and a student dormitory. The four-year-old forest of great trees looks as if it housed the shinobi village for generations. The hokage's manor sat looking out towards Hodge's original landmark, the demon skull which had been renovated to be Magnus's Heavenly Sword Sect. Now at the center of the city sat a giant gold sword planted in the ground rising higher than the tallest buildings. It gave the entire village an extra sense of Magnus, radiating an arrogant and domineering aura reflecting the owner of the greatest sword intent yet to be seen. Galileo was relieved to see the city wasn't burning down, but now he was even more worried as to what Magnus was so pressed about.
Crashing down in front of the biggest most lavish looking estate Galileo and Lumiette were greeted by a group of security ninja. "Yo, where's Magnus?"
"Who wants to know?" Galileo's question was answered by a little brown haired boy with freckles.
"Nash right? I'm Galileo Vermillion, your brother's friend. Where is he?"
"I don't believe that, the tiny terror is out of the country right now. The good riddance festival just ended a few days ago."
"Good riddance festival?! What the hell!" Galileo didn't have to ask to know who it was about. "Someone is gonna burn for that."
Lumiette stifled a chuckle behind him. "It seems the tiny terror is notorious all around the kingdom. I thought there would be a day or two of celebration in the capital but for it to be a festival reaching all the way out here…" she was embarrassed but tickled at the same time.
"I don't like you anymore Lumiette."
"What? You must know what people think of you by now."
"Hey! If you can't prove you're the real deal beat it." Cracking his knuckles "I'm gonna need some identification." Nash interrupted
"Hold up Magnus needs me! I don't have time for this! Outta the way before I beat you and your little friends to a pulp."
"Try it!" Nash drew his sword ready to fight. His squad did the same.
"Can't we just talk this out?" Lumiette tried to calm the situation.
"Galileo! You're here!" Noelle opened the doors drawing everyone's attention, she had a panicked expression. "Hurry come in!"
"Stupid punks." Galileo flinched at the security team.
"Stop that, this is why there's a festival." Lumiette said as they went inside.
Seeing Noelle looked stressed enough for the whole kingdom he tried not to show his worry going through the Pendragon manor. Still nothing seemed out of the ordinary so far, as ordinary as Magnus' home could be. Gold decorations were everywhere, and expensive art lined the walls (Galileo didn't think the extensive series of Magnus statues and paintings were vain at all.) Everything was pristine and neatly polished, nearly every surface showed their reflection. Security cameras were set up in certain areas to monitor the halls. Galileo noticed other modern amenities here too, he could hear the sound of a vacuum cleaner in the distance "(Magnus spared no expense on this place…)"
"I'm glad you're here Galileo." Some of the tension started to leave her face.
"Noelle happy to see me? Something is definitely not right here. You ok?" He put a hand on her forehead.
"Stop that, I'm being serious!" She swatted his hand away. "After his fight with Doflamingo-"
"You guys fought Doflamingo!?"
"Yes, he's dead now."
"What for real? When did he show up?"
"Just shut up and let me explain! Doflamingo owned Joker city and we went there to take the mountain it was situated in. I fought Doflamingo first and got injured, when Magnus saw me hurt he went berserk and killed him. When he came back, he started acting strange and then disappeared. He just up and left us in Joker city."
"Ooooh Joker in Joker city that makes sense. Joker is Doflamingo's street name."
"Galileo I swear-"
"Sorry, sorry go on."
"We turned the kingdom upside down to find out he's holed himself up in his room. He's been in there for the last few days, and he put barriers on the door and windows to keep everyone out. I don't know what's so bad that he's hiding from us, but I'm guessing you're the only one he will see right now Galileo. We were about to send a squad to come get you when you arrived." She stopped in front of a large set of ornate double doors with black inscriptions drawn across them. Asta, Kirsch, and Morgiana were waiting outside with some Silva boy who looked strikingly similar to Noelle. Several broken tools and seared spots on the wall showed various failed attempts to get inside. "Here we are, we need you to get him to come out."
"Oh wow, I feel so important… Umm wish me luck." He nodded to the other Pendragons. "Asta, Kirsch Morgiana…um boy Noelle? Who's he?"
"This is Bandit, Bandit meet Galileo." Noelle hurriedly introduced them. "Magnus, Galileo is here! Open the door!" No response.
"Yo Magnus, It's me!" When Galileo knocked on the door the seals receded from the door. Then ever so slightly it creaked open. "Alright I'm going in…" Entering the room the door closed and resealed itself behind Galileo "Magnus why are you being weird? Everyone is worried you know."
"I've been expecting you No- Gali? Where's Noelle? She isn't with you?"
"She's right outside… she figured I was the only one who could enter for some reason known only to you."
"That idiot…either of your rings would have worked as the key. " Magnus stood looking out of a window on the far side of the room. The barrier made the view one way so he could see out but no one could see in. He was dressed very unusually for Magnus, actually unusual for a Black Clover character in. He wore a grey hoodie with dark sleeves sporting cloud patterns and a tiger head on the back, over a white t-shirt and jeans with one pant leg rolled up. He turned extra slow so that Galileo could see his whole outfit. "Anyways, peep my drip. You like?"
"(That hoodie is pretty cool…) What the hell!? I know you didn't call me here so urgently to look at Earth fashion! And why are you locked up in here like this? Did something happen to you in Joker city? Are you hiding from someone?" Galileo was slightly impressed but everything about this situation was very un-Magnus.
"That's not the only reason I called you for, and ME hiding from someone? Hah, never."
"Then what is going on here?! If you're perfectly fine, why are the other Pendragons out there worried sick about you having a mental breakdown?"
"It's kind of complicated. I did have a mental breakdown at first, but I got over it already."
"Then the problem is?"
"Look around you!" Galileo hadn't paid much attention to the décor, but Magnus had turned his room into an Earth style arcade. He mounted a big screen television on the wall, hooked up to a brand new playstation and surround sound system. Various posters lined the walls, and he had shelves lined with manga/anime box sets and figurines of his favorite characters among other things. In the back corner he had a pool/ air hockey/ foosball table sitting next to several arcade games. Each game had a second so that two could play together. There were vending machines lined with snacks from earth including. There was plenty of other fun earth stuff set up all around the room.
"I see why you haven't left your room now…I can't imagine how many points all this stuff cost."
"That doesn't matter, I figured out how to make some of it myself anyways."
"How did you-"
"When you have an army of clones it's pretty easy. Plus being a half souled jinchuriki killed my need to sleep much… I had a lot of free time to work."
"Half souled?"
"Yeah, half souled. Which reminds me, how could you not have noticed part of my soul has been missing? I have literally spent thirteen years as a heartless taskmaster!"
"Hey don't do that, I couldn't have known about your soul until my yyh powers kicked in, and on top of that you were scolding me for having fun with this whole reincarnation. 'Playing house' was what I think you called it. Who could tell the commoner emperor anything?"
"I had hoped his best friend, who also didn't come to look for me while I was a struggling orphan either. I had to learn to cook to find a way to survive on pot potatoes daily without going mad."
"I- um…my powers combined to make me a bad person…I think…(I can't really justify that one, shit I am a bad friend…) What was this mental breakdown about?" Trying to change the subject.
Magnus glared at him for a moment "According to my system, I didn't have a part of my soul and most of my emotions up until Doflamingo pissed me off to a certain extent. Since then, all these different feelings have been flooding me out on a waaay too big scale. Fear, empathy, rage,- "
"And apparently fun."
"That was so funny I forgot to laugh. Training is fun."
"In what world Magnus!?!"
"One with powers. Where was I? Oh yeah, last time we talked I thought it was you who changed too much but I feel like I see the world in a new light now. These emotions were too much at first. I needed some time to sort it all out, that's why I came back here to think. I realized I'm probably a bigger monster than you."
"The golden boy Magnus Pendragon? Worse than the capital's very own demon child? I doubt it."
"You're guilty of being an asshole and an arsonist, but I know you don't really hurt people. You genuinely look at Mera, Fuego, and Leo as your siblings. That- those hearts of yours have love for the people around you, but me? I had believed everyone in this world were just NPCs to be controlled, including Asta and Yuno. I only trained them with the intention of having a private army, not to protect anyone. They were made familiar with slaughter as soon as they put those headbands on. It's a wonder they aren't twisted sociopaths now, but they're hands are all dirty. The guilt from all that is a bit much to deal with in one go…but no need for your sympathy, I'm fine now. I made a resolve to be better for them."
"Then you got bored and did this?" Gesturing to the room around them.
"If you saw how this place used to look, you'd understand. My bedroom was an office with a bed. You know how depressingly lame that is?"
"I can only imagine…" Going through the list of titles on the shelf he noticed a lack of games in the action and adventure genres. "Where's all the good stuff."
"You'll be surprised how boring they get when you can do better than the characters…but I did learn a combo or two."
"Of course you did. Since you're normal again we gotta ditch work and do something exciting later."
"I wouldn't have it any other way brother."
"But for now play me." Galileo said picking up a controller.
"Don't be in such a rush to lose, before that you gotta go change. Take this there's a changing room over there" giving him a bag of clothes.
"What's wrong with my Vermilion uniform?"
"Real people don't wear infinite copies of the same outfit. As the only two people from earth, we gotta uphold the tradition of swag."
"So you're cosplayed as Ilpyo Park?"
"Is it not cool? I would've dressed as Mori Jin, but someone stole the most important piece of the outfit from the system…you know unique items are one of a kind." Galileo had only realized then that the sleep mask he used to train his haki years ago was Mori Jin's, the master of the most badass form of footwork ever invented. He'd never actually gotten rid of it but just kept it around for naps here and there. When he pulled it out of his ring, it was worn and tattered much to Magnus dismay. He swiped a hand over it with a faint green glow and it became good as new.
"What did you just do?"
"That's one of my three magics, heavenly creation magic. It can restore both living and nonliving things." Magnus said holding up a finger with the green glow.
"What about the other two?"
"Heavenly suppression magic, works sort of like bloodline suppression but with a broader range." A second finger was raised glowing gold. "Lastly my heavenly destroyer magic has been able to completely annihilate everything I've tested it on so far." The third raised finger glowed purple. The combined aura of the three energies gave off a feeling as powerful as the blood flowing through Galileo's veins. "As of now I can only summon a little bit, so I use them to compliment my swordsmanship and ninjutsu. I'm sure there will be a change when I get my grimoire.
"Whoa…" Galileo was speechless. Isn't he a little too broken?
"Thank you, now hurry up so we can start a soccer tournament!"
"You got fifa?"
"Yup the roster is fully updated too."
"Hell yea let's GOOOOOO!"
Though no one outside could hear their laughter, Magnus and Galileo gamed well into the night and the next morning.
