Chapter 348: Muggle Product
"What is... this?"
Hagrid squinted, trying to make out the slender object that was too delicate for his large hands.
Dumbledore cautiously avoided direct contact, instead he hovered his fingers above the metallic needle and slowly lifted it, causing the needle to be gradually extracted.
The silvery-gray metal was sharp and gleamed with a cold light.
"This seems to be a Muggle thing, doesn't it?"
Hagrid poked it with his fingernail and said doubtfully.
"Recently, some healers at St. Mungo's have started to introduce Muggle medical instruments."
Dumbledore narrowed his eyes slightly, and examined it for a while before saying, "However... it's indeed more common for Muggles to use these things."
Dumbledore waved his wand, and a silver phoenix emerged from the tip of his wand and it flashed briefly before disappearing.
Not long after, Professor Charity Burbage and Madam Pomfrey hurried over. They were wearing thick cloaks over their nightgowns, with Madam Pomfrey's hair disheveled.
They entered the Hog's Head Inn, where the werewolf had been placed in a guest room upstairs. The dim oil lamp illuminated only a small area, and the room was in poor sanitary condition, with everything appearing greasy.
Hagrid was by the bedside, clutching his wound, while Dumbledore stood by the window and gazed outside at something unknown.
"Dumbledore, Hagrid, we—"
Before Professor Burbage could finish her greeting, as Hagrid turned around, she saw the furry figure behind him.
The werewolf had awakened from his coma, snarling and baring his teeth, but was tightly bound by several chains.
"Ah—"
The Muggle Studies professor let out a scream, and almost turned to flee.
"Calm down, Charity."
Dumbledore steadied Professor Burbage and said, "He's not capable of harming anyone now. I called you here to take a look at this thing—Poppy, please attend to Hagrid's wounds first."
"Of course."
Madam Pomfrey said calmly.
The Patronus Phoenix had already informed her of what she needed to bring, and Madam Pomfrey was well-prepared.
She placed her seemingly small medical kit, no larger than two bricks, on the ground, and with a series of clicks, it unfolded into a five-tiered, two-meter-wide stand.
Hagrid's wounds were still bleeding. He removed his coat, revealing the horrific injuries, which elicited another gasp from Professor Burbage beside him.
She glanced fearfully at the werewolf on the bed and her heart was pounding wildly, but the presence of the white-bearded headmaster beside her gave Professor Burbage a great sense of security.
After taking a few deep breaths, she focused intently on the slender needle in her hand.
Meanwhile, Madam Pomfrey mixed silver powder and dittany in the right proportions and applied it evenly to Hagrid's wounds. At the same time, she asked sternly, "Were you bitten by him?"
"No, I was very careful about that," Hagrid shook his head and asked worriedly, "Will I turn into a werewolf?"
Madam Pomfrey glanced at him. "Generally speaking, no."
"Generally?" Hagrid's voice rose in alarm.
"The necessary condition for becoming a werewolf is being bitten by a transformed werewolf during a full moon. What truly transmits lycanthropy is the blood and saliva of a werewolf after transformation," Madam Pomfrey explained objectively.
"That's a relief," Hagrid sighed. "Tonight isn't a full moon, and I wasn't bitten."
However, the frown on Madam Pomfrey's face did not ease.
"That's the problem—Hagrid."
"Previously, there were no cases of werewolves transforming outside of a full moon. Until we understand the reason behind this werewolf's transformation, I can't be sure whether his claws carry the lycanthropy virus."
"Additionally, if your wound came into contact with his blood or saliva, there's still a chance of infection. Being bitten is the most direct way, but it's not the only way. Do you understand?"
Hagrid's face grew paler and more anxious as Madam Pomfrey spoke.
The large man looked pitifully at Madam Pomfrey, as if he were about to break down in tears.
But after a long silence, he said, "Madam, could you please take a look at him too? I hit him several times, and he might have seven or eight broken bones."
Knowing that the werewolf was Lupin, Hagrid had held back during the fight, allowing him to escape multiple times. But in critical moments, he knew he had struck hard and even heard the sound of bones breaking.
Hagrid sat on the ground, sighing heavily, torn between worrying about potentially becoming a werewolf and fearing that he had crippled Lupin.
Madam Pomfrey gave him a gentle look before turning to treat the werewolf on the bed.
"Awooo—"
The werewolf snarled and howled.
Madam Pomfrey took out a potion and poured it into the werewolf's long mouth. In less than a second, the werewolf fell back into a deep sleep.
The school nurse in her white robes waved her wand, and beams of emerald-green light fell on the werewolf, examining his injuries.
On the other side of the room, Professor Burbage used magic to enlarge the needle for closer inspection before saying, "This is indeed a Muggle product, and it has nothing to do with the medical equipment introduced at St. Mungo's."
"-Unrelated?" Dumbledore asked.
"Yes," Professor Burbage replied, slightly nervous. "This needle is too thick. It's typically used on large animals. The ones at St. Mungo's are much thinner, and even then, most people are reluctant to have them used on them..."
"Also, look here—the needle tip has three small holes. I've never seen this design before. It's very precise in terms of craftsmanship, but it seems unnecessary..."
"If it were necessary, what purpose do you think these small holes might serve?" Dumbledore inquired.
"Uh..." Professor Burbage was momentarily stumped. After thinking for a while, she said, "Maybe to inject liquid faster? That's my guess."
Dumbledore gave a slight nod but said nothing. Instead, he waved his wand in a circular motion and collected the residual substance mixed with blood from inside and outside the needle, and then gathered it into a small droplet.
The red droplet looked like blood. Professor Burbage watched as Dumbledore carefully placed it into a crystal vial. As she stared at it, she suddenly shivered.
She couldn't shake the feeling that the droplet exuded an exceptionally sinister aura.
"Thank you for your help, Charity," Dumbledore said.
"I didn't do much..." Professor Burbage replied, somewhat embarrassed. "I'm happy to assist you."
Dumbledore smiled and said, "You went through the trouble of coming here in the middle of the night. Fawkes will take you back."
In a flash of red light, the phoenix appeared in the dimly lit room.
Professor Burbage glanced enviously at the phoenix and quickly waved her hands. "No, no, it's such a short distance. I can walk back."
"Tonight isn't particularly safe. Let Fawkes take you," Dumbledore insisted.
His firm tone made Professor Burbage sense something amiss. She swallowed nervously and said, "...Alright."
