Chapter 71: Neville Longbottom
By the time Harry returned to the Gryffindor common room, it was almost empty.
Baring a few students with whom Harry did not enjoy much of a relation, no one else was present in the hall.
Even Hermione was not present as she had gone to sleep. This made Harry raised an eyebrow.
He had expected her waiting in the hall and to fire probably dozens of questions at him. It seemed that Minerva's response had dealt a big blow to Hermione and Harry could very well understand her emotions.
He also wondered if Hermione had still learned about the hundred plus house elves working in Hogwarts. He was really curious if something like S.P.E.W- Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare would happen in this lifetime?
Although, he had left a lot of indirect hints to her about the working of wizarding world, he was yet to have a direct and straightforward conversation with her. He really did not know, how much he had affected her mindset.
According to Harry, the flaw in Hermione was not her worshipping of authority or her complete and full faith in the law; but the flaw in her was her view point to look at everything in shades of black and white.
He wanted to teach her to read in between the black and white, to read the greys. And thus, he had been waiting for an opportunity to have the 'direct' conversation with her.
Harry was also sure that Daphne's case would occupy Hermione's mind for a long period of time and might take away her attention from the condition of the elves.
Harry did not dwell in the common room for a long time and he walked into his dormitory. He hoped that it would be better if Ron had already gone to sleep or that idiot avoid him.
He did not want to engage in useless conversations with an idiot person.
When Harry arrived to his dormitory, the room had been shrouded in darkness. Only the small night candles which dimly lit the room had been burning.
All of the occupants of the room except one had gone to sleep.
"Harry," the low voice brought Harry's attention towards the man standing in the corner of the room.
"Neville," Harry replied back as he closed the distance and approached the Longbottom.
"Is everything alright?" Neville asked in a hesitant tone.
"Yeah, Neville," Harry nodded with a raised eyebrow. "What happened?"
"No…" Neville said with his usual timidness. "You missed the sorting ceremony yesterday and then we learned that you had broken the skull of a seventh year Slytherin."
"And now today morning what happened in the great hall," Neville continued. "And now after dinner, professor McGonagall took you to the headmaster's office."
"Also…" Neville was in a lot of hesitation.
"What, Neville?" Harry asked in a soft voice. He did not want to scare the man.
"Also, when Ron came back… you know after dinner," Neville said slowly. "He was talking about how you have changed… and all that…"
Although, Neville did not dive into detail, Harry could still guess what Ronal Weasley would have talked about it.
Given the size of his single brain cell, Ron could not have talked about anything other than Harry becoming friends with a 'slimy snake.'
Harry shook his head, "Everything is fine, Neville."
"If you need any help… I can help you," Neville replied with a lot of resolve on his face.
A smile appeared on Harry's face as he looked at Neville.
"Now that you say it," Harry smiled. "You can help me in one thing."
"What is it, Harry?" Neville asked.
Although he really wanted to help Harry, now that Harry asked for help, Neville started feeling fearful. But since, he had promised, he resolved to help Harry.
Harry was amused and understood very well the 'inner feelings' of Neville Longbottom.
And according to Harry, Neville was not fearful of the upcoming situation or what would happen to him. Neville Longbottom was fearful of his inferiority. He feared that he in place of being a help would prove to be a burden.
He feared that he would not be good enough and would drag Harry backwards. He feared that he would prove to be an impediment and obstruction instead of any help.
"That I cannot tell you, Neville," Harry whispered in a low tone, as if he was telling some secret.
"But you will need to come with me… tomorrow night after dinner," Harry added with a whisper. "And you cannot tell anyone… not even Hermione."
Neville gulped but he could not really back off.
He nodded his head, "Ok, Harry," and he somewhat regretted the help he had offered.
"Good night, Neville," Harry said with smile as he walked towards his four poster bed.
"Good night, Harry," Neville mumbled but he was going to have a sleepless night today.
And he was not the only one. A lot of people were going to have sleepless night- Albus Dumbledore, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Daphne Greengrass; because of the actions of Harry Potter.
Meanwhile, Harry was going to have a pleasant sleep.
