Chapter 27: The Winter Soldier's Glimmer & A Risky Intervention
The sight of the Winter Soldier, a brutal, efficient force of nature, clashing with Captain America on the rapidly crumbling Helicarrier One, sent a cold shiver down Adam's spine. It was the iconic fight, the reveal, the moment Bucky Barnes's past began to claw its way back. This was his chance. A gamble, but one he had to take.
He knew the trigger words Yelena had found: "Желание, ржавый, семнадцать, рассвет, печь, девять, добросердечный, возвращение, один, товарный вагон." Desire, Rusted, Seventeen, Daybreak, Furnace, Nine, Benevolent, Homecoming, One, Freight Car. A sequence of words designed to strip a man of his identity, to turn him into a weapon.
Adam needed to disrupt it, plant a seed, a crack in the façade. He couldn't shout the words over a comm channel; that was too obvious, too risky, and too liable to be dismissed as interference. He needed to use the Guild System, subtly. He had a theory, a long-shot.
He accessed a rarely used function in the Guild Master interface: [Guild Master: Subliminal Programming Module – Target: Bucky Barnes (sighted, loyalty 0% - requires direct psychic/systematic proximity)]
A warning flashed: [WARNING: EXTREMELY HIGH GP COST. RISK OF FAILURE HIGH (95%+). POTENTIAL FOR LOYALTY PENALTY ON FUTURE RECRUITMENT IF FAILED. PROCEED? Y/N]
"Ninety-five percent failure rate," Adam muttered, grimacing. "But a five percent chance is better than zero." He couldn't just let Hydra keep him. He needed Bucky. He needed that future loyalty.
[Adam Stiels – Guild Points (GP): 227 - 100 (Subliminal Programming Module cost) = 127 GP!]
He pushed the command, mentally focusing on the image of Bucky, on the raw, desperate fight unfolding. He wasn't trying to control Bucky, not directly. He was trying to bypass the conscious mind, to whisper into the subconscious. He selected the sequence of trigger words, and instructed the Guild System to project them. Not audibly, but as a pure, raw data packet, aimed directly at Bucky's neural network, a subliminal pulse designed to bypass the immediate chaos and directly target his deep-seated programming. Like a sonic boom to the soul, heard but not understood.
On the Helicarrier, Bucky had Steve on the ropes, his metal arm glinting, his eyes cold and empty. He swung the arm for a killing blow.
Then, for a microsecond, his eyes flickered. A flicker of something, a fragment of recognition, a distant echo. The swing faltered, just a fraction of an inch, just enough for Steve to block. Not a full stop, not a full breakdown, but a hesitation. A glitch.
It was almost imperceptible to Captain America, who used the opening to disarm Bucky and throw him clear. But Adam saw it. He felt the drain of GP, the system confirming the attempt. Success? Partial, at best. But it was something.
He immediately followed up with a second, less direct, more insidious command. [Guild Master: Data Imprint – Target: Bucky Barnes (50 GP)]
Another GP drain. This time, he wasn't sending trigger words. He was sending a single, simple, powerful thought: Who is Bucky? Not a question from outside, but a thought that would feel like it was his own, rising from the deepest recesses of his fractured mind.
Again, the feedback was minimal. Bucky, stunned by the fall, was clinging to the Helicarrier's crumbling side. His brow furrowed, a flicker of something beyond cold rage in his eyes. He didn't answer, couldn't answer, but the question was there. It was planted. A digital seed in the shattered garden of his mind.
Adam slumped back in his chair, exhausted but exhilarated. It was a massive gamble, a huge GP expenditure, but it was worth it. He hadn't saved Bucky today. He hadn't broken his programming. But he had interfered. He had planted the first crack in Hydra's control.
He watched as Captain America, refusing to fight his friend, fell into the river below as the Helicarrier crashed. The Winter Soldier, shaken by the battle and whatever invisible force had nudged him, pulled himself free, disappearing into the chaos, leaving behind a bewildered Cap.
The battle for Washington D.C. was won. But the battle for Bucky Barnes had just begun.
