Chapter 498: Return to Los Angeles, Report the Case, Birthday Dinner
On the way back to Los Angeles, an agent from the San Francisco FBI division was responsible for driving, while Luo An sat in the back seat, listlessly looking at the scenery outside the window.
Mona hugged her laptop and looked at Luo An's profile with an inexplicable emotion stirring in her heart.
In just over a year, Luo An had incredibly fast ascended to the position of group leader of the Special Investigation Team, and with the resolution of this poisoning case, his role may not change immediately, but his status and reputation within the FBI would definitely see a significant increase.
As Luo An's girlfriend, Mona naturally felt proud and delighted for him.
Along with her happiness, Mona also felt troubled. It was good that Luo An excelled, but it seemed like he was maybe too excellent.
The Federation was a country that valued families, with a long-standing tradition of intermarrying among various families to bond them through marriage and to absorb talents into their own clans.
With Luo An's performance, there were definitely some families paying attention to him now. Although Mona was his girlfriend, a girlfriend was not a wife, and even wives could divorce.
Thinking of certain young ladies who were younger than her, more voluptuous than her, had longer legs than her, and were prettier than her, a peculiar gleam flashed in Mona's eyes.
Mona's incessant gaze attracted Luo An's attention, and he turned his head to ask:
"What are you looking at me for?"
"Nothing."
Mona shook her head, buried the things Reesi had taught her deep in her heart, and changed the subject with a smile:
"Now that the suspects in the gas attack have been caught and the case is nearing its end, what do we do next?"
"We do nothing much, just slowly wrap up the work."
"What about the gang of bank robbers?"
"Wait."
"Wait? What do you mean?"
"We wait for Reesi's news."
Luo An stretched with vigor as he remembered that when Reesi was tracking Ke Green to Las Vegas, he had devised a rough plan for Reesi, one that called for the experienced Reesi to improvise accordingly. Considering the time, Reesi should be about done.
Hearing this, both Mona and Michelle looked puzzled, but since there were others in the car, Luo An did not continue the discussion and planned to explain the situation when they returned to the Special Investigation Team.
Transporting was a hard task, and sitting in a vehicle was equally exhausting. Luo An and the others had been in the car for over six hours from San Francisco to Los Angeles, leaving all three of them with sore waists, aching backs, and leg cramps. It took them a while to recover after disembarking.
But what Luo An and his companions went through was nothing compared to the agents from the FBI San Francisco division in charge of the transport; after a few hours of rest, they would have to drive another six-plus hours back.
"Thank you for your hard work."
In the parking lot of the Los Angeles FBI division building, Luo An, full of empathy, patted the shoulder of the agent who had driven them the whole way. He was about to say more when Group Leader Potante Byrne, accompanied by several agents, approached.
Byrne waved his hand to instruct the agents behind him to manage the handover of the suspect Tom Hamilton and to take care of food and rest for the transport personnel from San Francisco. Then he grabbed Luo An's arm and pulled him toward the building:
"Luo An, your Special Investigation Team handled this case very well, the Director wants to see you."
"Alright, Chief."
Luo An hastened to keep up with Potante Byrne's pace, simultaneously throwing a look back at Mona and Michelle. Mona raised her hand in a sweeping gesture; they were well accustomed to the drill and understood what came next for them.
They walked straight to the Director's office. The pleasure in Director Nasim's eyes at seeing Luo An enter the office was unmistakable.
The gas attack had resulted in several deaths and left a big group of people comatose and hospitalized. The entire building had undergone days of disinfection and cleaning. California First Republican Bank outright declared that the affected building would take a month hiatus, transitioning work to other branches.
In addition to Los Angeles' major news media, which described the incident as a terrorist attack among various other chaotic reports, the head of the FBI's Los Angeles Branch, Nasim, was also very troubled and under great pressure.
A few hours earlier, after hearing Potante Byrne say that Luo An had led the Special Investigation Team to crack the case and was currently escorting the prisoners back to Los Angeles, Nasim's eyes suddenly lit up, and then he sternly ordered Potante Byrne to bring Luo An to his office as soon as he returned to Los Angeles.
When Luo An and his companion entered the office, Nasim's face immediately revealed a smile, he got up, walked over to Luo An, and patted his arms vigorously, signaling them to take a seat.
The secretary served three cups of coffee to the three individuals in the room and showed a smile to Luo An before leaving the office. Nasim sat back down in his chair and asked Luo An to go through the details of the case investigation.
Taking a sip of coffee, Luo An pondered for a few seconds and began with the test report issued by the CDC.
This case in itself was not particularly complex, it was just that the high number of injuries and deaths easily attracted attention, and combined with the bank robbery case, it made it very easy to stray in the wrong direction of the investigation and overlook some details.
Compared to the narrative for the team leader, when facing Nasim, Luo An's description of the investigation process had more ups and downs and was more dramatic.
It wasn't that Nasim liked to hear such stories, but Luo An guessed that Nasim was likely to hold a press conference afterwards, and the more sensational the story, the more it would attract the media's attention.
Indeed, after hearing Luo An's case introduction, Nasim was full of admiration, he didn't say much, just nodded to Luo An and then took out an invitation from his desk and handed it to Luo An, smiling:
"You will definitely be able to handle the follow-up work of this case properly, I won't say more.
Next, our FBI Los Angeles Branch will hold a major press conference for this poison gas case, Luo An, Potante, both of you and I will attend together.
In addition, this is an invitation to the Mayor of Los Angeles' birthday party, personally sent to you by the mayor, Luo An, you absolutely cannot be absent that day."
After Potante Byrne informed Nasim about the successful resolution of the case, Nasim also communicated with the Mayor of Los Angeles City regarding this matter.
The Mayor of Los Angeles initially had some doubts, but after learning that the lead investigator of the case was Luo An Greenwood, the team leader of the Special Investigation Team, who had previously experienced the First Lady's Bombing Case, the Mayor of Los Angeles showed a smile, directed his secretary to add Luo An Greenwood's name to the guest list and issued an invitation to Luo An, asking Nasim to help pass it on.
Luo An took the invitation, paused briefly upon seeing the date, and then accepted it.
Nasim nodded in satisfaction, and after a brief exchange, Luo An and Potante Byrne left Nasim's office ahead of time.
Upon returning to the Special Investigation Team, there were actually four people present, including Mona and Michelle, Winslow and Chenier were also in the office area.
Luo An put the invitation aside, with a slight frown on his brow:
"You two..."
"Sorry, team leader, we have already..."
Winslow and Chenier instantly stood up, their expressions a mix of embarrassment and complexity.
Luo An, guessing what had happened, gestured for them to discuss it later, then went into the team leader's office to change his clothes.
Nasim, an impatient man, if he said there would be a press conference, there would be one, leaving Luo An and Potante Byrne not much time, as they had to discuss which details of the case would be inappropriate to disclose later on.
While Luo An was changing, Winslow casually picked up the invitation:
"Our team leader actually received an invitation to the Mayor of Los Angeles' birthday party?"
"Birthday party? The mayor's or the mayor's wife's?"
Adjacent to him, Michelle took a sip of coffee and said:
"I remember the Mayor of Los Angeles's daughter is turning twenty this year, she has no boyfriend and is very beautiful, she's always wanting to make her way into Hollywood."
"??!!"
Upon hearing this, Mona's ears perked up immediately.
