Chapter 13: A Terrifying Deduction
Max didn't stop running even when he was far away from the Brown's group. Fortunately, leveling gave him newfound strength so he didn't have any problems with carrying Charlotte.
Of course, he enjoyed her soft body pressing against his, even though there were clothes between them. It still felt amazing.
Meanwhile, Charlotte was having different thoughts, as the scene where Max stood before her flashed through her mind. His broad back that seemed like a mountain to her.
It was blocking everything coming at her, protecting her from people who wanted to harm her. She knew they would have been defeated easily if the other group attacked, yet she felt safe behind that back.
It was funny, but it was the first time she actually felt like that. Due to her status, she was always at the front, facing every problem head-on.
She had even forgotten what it felt like being protected, granted she knew it was just fake safety. But it felt nice.
A smile played on her lips as she thought, "How nice it would be if that moment lasts forever."
Stelle saw her sister's expression and sighed. She gave a strange look to Max and thought, "This man is dangerous."
"Where are we going?" Stelle asked. "You already have the map to them."
"It was useless to us," Max replied, as they slowed down. "I already know the route. Also, what we want is entirely different from what they're looking for. Just trust me!"
"Trust a coward?" Stelle scoffed, probing his reaction.
"If valuing your life is cowardice then sure," Max shrugged. "Anyway, about that map. It basically leads to a ruined castle of an old baron. It probably has a Quasi-Second Grade Monster with a skill."
"Damn! It would have been ours. A Bronze skill... damn it," Stelle cursed. "Only if we were a little stronger then we might have..."
"Don't worry. We aren't going to fight The Black Knight," Max chuckled and said. "We're going for the Second-Grade Monster there."
Stelle stopped in her tracks, as she looked at Max with a dumbfounded face. She asked, "You're joking, right?"
"I'm not. It's the best thing I can get while being in Bronze Rank so why should I miss it?" Max said, as he also stopped and put Charlotte down.
"You're crazy! That's a Second-Grade Monster you're talking about and a hidden boss probably so even more powerful," Stelle hissed, still in disbelief. "This is practically suicide."
"Pretty sure it isn't anything different from facing a Level 9 monster while not being even Level 1," Max shrugged.
"Yeah, but that's only because you had... clues..." Stelle finally understood his plan and exclaimed. "No way! You know its weakness?"
"But even if you know its weakness, can we exploit it?" Charlotte asked in worry.
"The monster we'll face can be impossible to beat even by Gold Rank Hunters, but it's different if we know its weakness," Max flashed a grin and said. "Even a bunch of low level hunters can win against it."
"How sure are you that we will win?" Charlotte asked, still skeptical about everything.
"Hundred percent," Max shrugged slightly and turned around. "If you still doubt, you can head back as there is also a high chance we will die before even using its weakness."
Saying that, he began to walk down the tunnel, leaving the two ladies lost in thoughts. While they were tempted to follow Max, they didn't want to die on the first Floor.
"What do you think, Big Sis?" Stelle asked, as usual throwing the decision making at her big sister.
Charlotte stared at Max's receding back and muttered, "I have a theory!"
"Theory?"
Turning around to face Stelle, Charlotte said, eyes shining in excitement, "I think he regressed, just like in those novels. He came back in time!"
Stelle was dumbfounded, staring at Charlotte as if she were an idiot. She, of course, knew about her sister's obsession with fantasy novels, especially the romance genre, but wasn't this a little too delusional?
"I'm not delusional, but I am saying based on the clues we have," Charlotte knocked on Stelle's head lightly, glaring at her. "Think about it, he survived against a Level 9 Monster while not being awakened. He knew its weakness, he knows so much about the Labyrinth including these shortcuts and everything..."
She paused for a second before continuing.
"And if what he said is true, then this might be one of the rarest events of the Labyrinth, the chance of fighting the Main Hidden Boss. Only those bosses are above the Rank Limit. There is no way someone can even predict their timings and location, let alone their powers and weaknesses. It's impossible unless you have knowledge of the future."
Stelle was even more dumbfounded, because this time she genuinely believed Charlotte's words. They made perfect sense and would explain Max's behavior till now.
"Lastly, you said he cares about us, right?" Charlotte smiled and said. "He also knows how to trigger you easily, but also appreciates you. Don't tell me you didn't notice his gaze?"
Stelle groaned slightly and turned her face away.
"Also, when he acted to defend us, I saw his intentions. He really wanted to defend and protect us. They weren't an act," Charlotte smiled, still remembering the broad back.
"So, you're saying that he came back in time and that's how he knows so many things? And maybe we had some relationship with him in his timeline, that's why he cares about us?" Stelle asked, feeling her head about to explode.
"Yes, but that's just my guess," Charlotte said with a nod. "Also, we can just follow him this time and let things go according to his plan, it'll become clear he has indeed regressed. Besides, people on top are gods so anything is possible."
Stelle nodded, as a mischievous smile formed on her lips, "Hehe, if that's really the case then I want him even more. A regressed hunter, hehehe."
Further down the tunnel, Max took small steps while waiting for the two to catch up.
[Hahahah! Oh my! This is just hilarious!]
"Huh! What happened?" Max asked, wondering what made this lazy goddess laugh so loudly.
[Nothing, hehe. I'll just say this "women have terrifying deductive ability"]
Max turned speechless and then ignored her. Whatever mind of bullshit she was spouting had nothing to do with him.
