Chapter 159: Chapter 161
Kakashi clenched the photo in his hand and muttered, "This is troublesome."
"Hey Kakashi, what should we do now? Should we report this to the Hokage?" Might Guy asked hesitantly.
"No," Kakashi shook his head. "Lord Hokage's recent behavior has been far too abnormal. The same goes for the two Konoha advisors. They've been staying indoors ever since that incident. If what Kirito said is true—and I believe it likely is—reporting to the Hokage won't help."
Might Guy paced anxiously. "But if Sunagakure is really being manipulated by Orochimaru, then Konoha will be in serious danger tomorrow!"
Kakashi closed his eyes, lost in thought for a moment, before opening them again. He glanced at Morino Ibiki and Gekkou Hayate, his expression resolute. "Do you trust me?" he asked gravely.
Ibiki and Hayate exchanged glances before nodding in unison. Both were experienced ninjas who couldn't deny the evidence before them, no matter how unsettling it was.
"Good," Kakashi said, taking a deep breath. Turning to Hayate, he continued, "Hayate, according to what Kirito said, Lady Tsunade and Jiraiya are already on their way to Konoha. I need you to search the major transportation routes overnight and try to locate them before the official Chunin Exam begins. When you find them, inform them about the exam being moved up and relay everything Kirito told us."
"Understood," Hayate said firmly. He quickly changed into his gear, nodded to Kakashi, and disappeared from the ward.
Kakashi then turned to Morino Ibiki. "Ibiki, I need you to oversee the interrogation department and organize a thorough search of Konoha's perimeter. Look for any signs of Sand Ninja or Sound Ninja operatives hiding nearby. If you find anything unusual, inform everyone immediately. We need to be prepared for the worst."
"No problem," Ibiki replied without hesitation. Then, with a moment of doubt, he asked, "But are you sure we shouldn't inform the Hokage about this?"
Kakashi shook his head again. "You heard what Kirito said. If he's bluffing, it won't matter. But if he's telling the truth, informing the Hokage will accomplish nothing. The Sand Ninja, unaware of the Fourth Kazekage's death, will still launch their attack. And none of us want a meaningless battle."
With a determined expression, Kakashi added, "We'll bear the consequences of our actions. I'll take full responsibility."
"Understood," Ibiki said, nodding. Like Hayate, he changed his gear and quickly left to carry out his mission.
Now, only Kakashi and Might Guy remained in the ward.
"Kakashi, what are we going to do?" Might Guy asked.
"We're going to negotiate with Sunagakure tomorrow," Kakashi replied, sighing as he walked to the window. He gazed into the distance, a deep weariness evident in his posture. "Sometimes, I wonder if all this is worth it. Even my father, who was strong enough to challenge the system, couldn't escape its corruption. Maybe we're all just tools in the end."
Meanwhile, Kirito had returned to Yuhi Kurenai's residence.
"How did it go?" Kurenai asked as she took Kirito's black robe, gently smoothing it out and hanging it in the closet.
"Don't worry. I've told Kakashi everything," Kirito said, stepping behind her and wrapping his arms around her. "He's not like the others who blindly follow Sarutobi Hiruzen. Kakashi genuinely cares about Konoha's safety, just like you."
Kirito's voice softened. "By the way, do you remember what you promised me last night?"
Kurenai's face flushed. "What?"
"To take a bath with me," Kirito reminded her with a mischievous grin.
"But I've already taken one," Kurenai tried to argue, her cheeks turning red.
Kirito chuckled. "That's fine. You can join me for another." Without waiting for her response, he swept her off her feet, carrying her into the bathroom as she glared at him reproachfully.
No words were spoken that night.
The next morning, before dawn, Kirito playfully sparred with Kurenai before returning to the hotel where he and Ye Cang were staying. Disguising themselves, they made their way to the venue of the official Chunin Exam.
Meanwhile, in a hot spring town about a hundred miles from Konoha, Jiraiya, Tsunade, and their group finally resumed their journey.
Tsunade held a drowsy Chinatsu in her arms. The little girl, excited to see Kirito soon, had barely slept the night before, leaving her mother equally exhausted.
"Tsunade, you don't look so good," Jiraiya noted.
"Blame this little one," Tsunade sighed. "She wouldn't sleep last night because she's so excited to see her father."
"Want me to carry her for a bit?" Jiraiya offered, his eyes gleaming with mischief.
Tsunade shot him a glare. "Not a chance. I'm not letting a pervert like you anywhere near my daughter."
Changing the subject, Tsunade turned her attention to Naruto, who was trailing behind them, busily practicing with a Rasengan. "Hey, blondie, what are you doing? You look like you're having a fit."
"I'm practicing," Naruto snapped back, clearly annoyed.
"Practicing what? How to look ridiculous?" Tsunade teased.
Naruto bristled. "This is Rasengan! An A-rank jutsu! And I'm going to master it!"
Tsunade raised an eyebrow. "Then show me."
Naruto deflated. "I… I can't do it yet."
Jiraiya explained, "The Rasengan requires precise chakra control. Naruto struggles with that, especially with the Nine-Tails interfering. He can't stabilize the chakra properly."
"Why not use shadow clones?" Tsunade suggested casually, recalling a technique Kirito had once mentioned.
"Shadow clones?" Both Jiraiya and Naruto's eyes lit up.
Naruto immediately tried it, and to everyone's amazement, he successfully formed a Rasengan and used it to blast a hole through a nearby tree. Overcome with excitement, he jumped up and shouted, "I did it! I finally did it!"
Tsunade smirked. "Not bad, kid."
As they celebrated, a figure suddenly emerged from the nearby forest. It was Gekkou Hayate.
Kneeling before them, Hayate said respectfully, "Lord Jiraiya, Lady Tsunade."
"Hayate? What's going on?" Jiraiya asked, surprised.
"The Chunin Exam has been moved up. It's happening today," Hayate explained.
Jiraiya's expression darkened. "Why? This doesn't make sense."
Hayate hesitated, then relayed everything Kirito had told Kakashi.
Tsunade's expression turned grim. "That old fool… What was he thinking?"
Jiraiya clenched his fists. "There's no time to argue. We need to get back to Konoha immediately."
With that, Jiraiya summoned a giant toad to carry the group, and they sped off toward Konoha.
