Naruto: Reborn as Uchiha Obito

Chapter 35: Kushina’s Romance Was a Side Quest

"My name is Madara Uchiha!"

Hearing that, the young woman's body visibly trembled. Her eyes widened as she stared at Obito in utter disbelief.

"What? Don't believe me?"

Obito raised a brow, a playful tone in his voice as he watched her reaction.

"N-No! It's not that, I just—"

She frantically waved her hands, clearly panicked.

It didn't matter whether he was the actual Madara Uchiha or not, no one could fake the kind of monstrous chakra he had.

At this point, she'd believe it if he said he was the Sage of Six Paths himself.

More importantly, she knew better than to doubt a man like that.

"So then… have you figured it out?"

Obito tilted his head, voice casual.

The woman didn't hesitate anymore.

She dropped to her knees in an instant, bowed low, and sat up with a straight back.

"Yes. I've figured it out."

"My name is Chihori. I'm willing to take my daughter Karin and follow you, my lord. Please take care of us."

Her words were trembling, desperate, respectful, and most importantly...the plea of a mother who'd seen too much shit.

"Good."

Obito nodded, satisfied. He glanced down at baby Karin.

Another tool secured. Still in the factory stage, but with enough investment, she'll be a top-tier weapon in a few years. ROI's looking solid.

"So, shall we go? Anything left to pack?"

"Yes, just give me a moment!"

Chihori quickly dashed off and came back with a small bundle, baby clothes and essentials.

"I'm ready, my lord."

"Great. Now… relax."

As the space around them twisted, Obito brought the mother and daughter straight into the Kamui dimension.

Inside the Kamui space

Chihori blinked, confused by the strange dimension.

"This is…?"

"Hey, who are they?"

Yugao Uzuki looked up from her book, still trying to meditate and suppress her killing intent the way Obito had taught her.

Her eyes landed on the mother and baby, and oops.

Her control slipped.

A trace of murderous aura escaped her body.

The result was immediate.

"WAHHHH!!"

Karin scrunched her tiny face and let out a cry so loud it echoed in this literal void dimension.

"Tch. Control your killing intent... you scared the damn baby."

Obito scolded lightly as he handed Karin back to Chihori.

Then, he took a moment to explain everything to Yugao, who they were, where they came from, and what had happened in Hidden Grass.

Yugao's expression darkened as she listened. Her gaze shifted toward the bite marks on Chihori's body. Her brows knit with surprise, then soft pity.

When Karin finally tired herself out and drifted to sleep, Yugao approached gently.

"Hello… my name is Yugao Uzuki."

"You… hello. I'm Chihori," she replied softly, still tense but managing a small nod.

Like many survivors of the Uzumaki clan, Chihori had long abandoned her surname, living in exile, always hiding her identity to stay alive.

Still, for the first time in years, she felt like she might be among allies.

The two started chatting in hushed tones.

After some small talk, Yugao eventually asked what had been on her mind:

"Chihori-san, if you don't mind me asking… why didn't you go to Konoha when things got bad?"

Chihori paused mid-sentence. Her body stiffened slightly.

She said nothing.

Obito, of course, couldn't resist jumping in.

"Heh. Because before the Uzumaki Country fell, they begged Konoha for help. Multiple times."

"But guess what? Not a single shinobi came to save them."

Yugao's eyes widened.

"Maybe… Konoha was caught up in other conflicts? Maybe they didn't have the time?"

"Sure," Obito said with a smirk. "That's exactly what they told Uzumaki Mito too."

"Oh, and it just so happens that around the same time… Konoha needed a new Jinchūriki."

"And oh wow, what a coincidence! Right after the Uzumaki Country was wiped out, they conveniently brought back a perfect container... a pure-blooded Uzumaki princess with no family left and nowhere else to go."

He gave her a look. One of those 'you see where I'm going with this?' looks.

Yugao nodded slowly.

"They gave her a home. A safe place. Then they made sure she'd settle down, get attached to the village... maybe even fall in love."

"Because once she has a family here, she won't ever want to leave."

"And wouldn't you know it… Minato Namikaze just happened to be right there, didn't he? A bright, handsome prodigy. Perfect match."

Yugao's lips parted, but no words came out.

She had nothing to say.

After a month on the road with Obito, watching war zones, ruins, orphans, betrayals... she could no longer write this off as conspiracy talk.

She had seen too much to still believe in fairy tales.

"No way all of that was just coincidence…" she finally muttered under her breath.

"Let me tell you a little story."

"Once upon a time, the princess of the Uzumaki clan was kidnapped by Cloud Shinobi. In Konoha Village, no less."

He let that marinate for a second.

"Then the prince... fresh Genin, shiny forehead protector and all heroically chased the kidnappers to the border of the Fire Country. Alone."

"He saved the princess. She fell in love. The end."

After laying that down, Obito looked over at Yugao with a smirk tugging under the mask.

"Well? Isn't that just the most heartwarming love story you've ever heard? Makes your heart flutter, right?"

He continued, voice dripping with sarcasm.

"A Jinchūriki-to-be, guarded by Anbu every day of her life, somehow gets kidnapped. Not just that... dragged all the way to the border. Nobody notices."

"And the elite Anbu? Nowhere. The security system? Apparently on vacation."

"Not to mention, it would've been more better if the ones kidnapping her were actually strong ninjas but no, they were fucking fodders."

"But surprise! newly minted Genin Minato just so happens to find her... swoops in, no backup, no strategy, just raw youthful protagonist energy, and saves her."

Obito tilted his head theatrically.

"I mean… come on. Doesn't that just bring a tear to your eye?"

"..."

Yugao said nothing.

She was too busy piecing together the bullshit puzzle she'd been force-fed her whole life.

Then, unexpectedly, Chihori spoke up.

"Uhh... Before we fled, the elders of the clan also told us something important."

Yugao turned to her.

"They said: never trust Konoha."

Smack.

That was the sound of Yugao's faith in Konoha faceplanting off a metaphorical cliff.

The heroic village of Will of Fire?

Gone.

A day later – Land of Water, Base 2

Obito stood at the entrance of the new underground hideout, addressing the mother and daughter he'd just relocated.

"From now on, this is your new home."

He gestured around with that same unbothered tone.

"Take your time getting used to the place. Once you're settled, Yugao will take you to the nearby town to pick up some essentials."

"Stuff for the base… and some baby crap for Karin."

"Thank you, sir!" Chihori said gratefully, bowing deeply.

Obito nodded lazily, gave a few more instructions, then turned and disappeared into the depth of the hideout.

Inside the darkness, he stood alone.

Time to summon the Devouring Coffin.

Time to build new tools, forge the next pieces on the board…
