Chapter 8: CHAPTER 8
Goa Kingdom – Center Street
Goa Kingdom's Center Street is the most prosperous area in the entire kingdom, bustling with merchants and traders daily. Goods are bought and sold, fortunes are made, and commerce flourishes.
However, near the border town, a particular promenade has earned an infamous name—Pirate Street. This is where notorious criminals, smugglers, and outlaws gather, turning it into a lawless zone. It's said that even pirates with bounties exceeding hundreds of millions of berries have appeared here, causing chaos significant enough to draw the attention of the Marines. However, after a major crackdown, the Marines have largely abandoned the area, allowing it to evolve into an unrestricted haven for pirates.
"This is Pirate Street? Doesn't seem like anything special."
Leone, clad in black clothes and a cloak, walked down Pirate Street. The path was lined with street vendors, most of whom seemed to be permanent residents. Gambling dens, seedy taverns, and illicit trade stalls filled the street, catering to the underworld clientele.
"I'll just pick this one."
Choosing a random tavern, Leone stepped inside. A wave of deafening noise hit him immediately, the rowdy atmosphere almost shaking his eardrums. Pirates filled the place, guzzling ale, stuffing themselves with meat, and boasting about their exploits—murder, arson, and looting. From all across the Goa Kingdom, rogues and fugitives congregated here.
"So many pirates… but which ones actually have a decent bounty?"
Leone had no intention of wasting time on small fry. If he was going to hunt pirates, he wanted ones worth the effort. He strode directly to the counter, rapped his knuckles on the table, and ordered,
"One Flame, thanks."
Having spent considerable time in Maggie's Tavern, Leone had learned a few secrets of the underworld. Nearly every region had its own underground intelligence network, often disguised as taverns. With enough money, one could buy any information needed.
The bartender placed a mug in front of him—fiery red beer with real flames flickering atop its surface.
"I need some information."
Leone casually flicked a silver coin toward the bartender. The man's eyes flashed with interest as he leaned in.
"What would you like to know?"
"I want a list of all the pirate bounties on Pirate Street. Name your price."
The bartender studied Leone for a moment before smirking knowingly.
"No problem… but this information isn't cheap."
"Will a gold coin do?"
"Wait here."
The bartender disappeared into a back room. Leone had earned those gold and silver coins by selling rare beasts, trading them for essential supplies and, now, valuable information.
A moment later, the bartender returned, placing a thick bundle on the counter.
"Here's what you need."
Leone flipped through the stack—wanted posters, thick and detailed.
"Got any rooms available? I'll take one."
He tossed another silver coin onto the counter.
"Here's your key. Room 3056."
Taking the key and the package, Leone headed upstairs. Once inside his room, he locked the door, sat at the small desk, and spread out the bounty posters.
"3,000 berries? Worthless. I could make more selling animals."
"25,000 berries… pass. Too much effort for too little reward."
"140,000 berries… decent, but not worth searching for."
One by one, he sifted through them, growing impatient. Eventually, he tossed all posters with bounties under a million berries into the trash. Only the high-value targets remained.
"I need at least three million berries. Ship repairs, supplies… Sailing isn't cheap, and there's no steady income at sea. I need to stock up while I can."
Leone's eyes gleamed as he made his decision—his next move was set.
"No, if I land on shore, there won't be any pirates there. Without pirates, I can't claim bounties, and without bounties, how am I supposed to replenish my supplies? Sailing requires money, and it's not cheap!"
Leone glanced at the stack of bounty posters in his hands.
"Anything below 10 million Berries is a waste of time."
With that, he tossed a pile of low-value posters into the trash. Only three remained in his grasp:
One worth 12 million BerriesOne worth 18 million BerriesOne worth 26 million Berries
"Alright, one of you three will be my next target. Whoever I run into first… consider yourself unlucky."
Memorizing the faces and names on the posters, Leone smirked. Then, with a casual flick of his fingers, he ignited the papers with friction alone. Sparks danced in the air before the posters disintegrated into ash.
At that moment, the tavern hall became rowdy again.
A section of the crowd suddenly cleared, forming an open space in the middle of the room. Two pirates, both red-faced and brandishing large swords, stood facing each other.
Pirates were naturally volatile—disputes could escalate from insults to blows, and from blows to bloodshed, all in an instant. This kind of spectacle was as common in taverns as drinking itself.
Rather than intervene, the surrounding patrons cheered, lifting their mugs and placing bets.
The two pirates lunged at each other, clashing weapons in a fierce exchange. It was clear they were skilled, their movements fluid and aggressive.
"Carlo! You represent the Scar Pirates. If you lose, I won't forgive you!"
A tall, bearded man downed his drink and muttered, watching the fight intently.
"Wait… Scar Pirates? Isn't that Scar Walker's crew?"
"So it's really him! No wonder they're acting so arrogant. I heard Scar Walker's bounty reached 12 million Berries after he sank a Marine ship last time!"
"Don't get ahead of yourself! You know who Carlo's fighting, right? That's a member of the Evil Tooth Pirates! Their captain, Evil Tooth Garcia, has a bounty of 18 million Berries—a full 6 million higher than Scar Walker!"
"Oh-ho, now this is going to be good! Two pirates from the 10-million-Berry range duking it out in the middle of Pirate Street—this doesn't happen every day!"
The spectators roared with excitement, some even setting up bets on the fight's outcome.
Meanwhile, in a dimly lit corner of the tavern, Leone watched the scene unfold. A cruel smile spread across his lips.
"12 million and 18 million… Both of them are here."
He rested his chin on his hand, eyes gleaming.
"This bounty hunt is turning out to be quite profitable… A clean 30 million Berries in one go."
