Chapter 9: CHAPTER 9
In the midst of a chaotic battlefield, two pirates clashed fiercely, their blades flashing under the sun. Each fought with everything they had, aiming to end the other's life.
Their strengths were evenly matched, leaving their bodies covered in wounds, yet neither could claim victory. The fight raged on until one pirate made a fatal misstep. Seizing the opening, the other delivered a devastating strike, severing an arm in a single motion. The duel had reached its conclusion.
"Haha! Well done, Carlo! Come and claim your bounty!"
Scar Walker's boisterous laughter echoed through the air as he relished the sight before him. On the other side, the notorious pirate Garcia, known for his ruthlessness, scowled in displeasure. As the defeated pirate stumbled toward him, seeking refuge, Garcia wordlessly drew his flintlock pistol, aimed at his own crewmate, and pulled the trigger.
Bang!
A life was snuffed out in an instant.
"My crew has no place for weaklings," Garcia spat, holstering his musket. "Dispose of the body."
Such brutal executions would have caused an uproar in a Marine-controlled city, but on Pirate Street, they were commonplace. Here, life held little value, and only strength commanded respect. The gathered pirates sneered at the fallen man; in their world, the weak were nothing but stepping stones for the strong.
"For the first time, I truly understand what cruelty means," Leone murmured, sipping his rum in silence.
This was the real world of pirates.
The adventures depicted in One Piece were a romanticized version, an illusion crafted from Luffy's ideals. In reality, pirates were ruthless, inhumane, and lived by the law of bloodshed. This was why the Marines placed bounties on their heads—to rid the seas of their menace.
In the manga, Luffy often defeated his enemies without taking their lives. He knocked them unconscious, allowing them to retreat or reflect. But in this world, death was as common as drinking and breathing. Mercy did not exist.
Leone exhaled, feeling a sense of relief that he possessed the strength to survive in such a place.
"Don't get too comfortable, Walker. Next time we meet at sea, I'll make sure you learn exactly why they call me 'Bad Tooth' Garcia!" the pirate captain sneered before turning on his heel. "Damn waste of time. We're leaving!"
With a dismissive wave, Garcia and his crew exited the tavern.
Leone set down his glass, his expression calm but determined.
"It's time to rid the world of some filth."
—
"Listen up! The next time you run into those Scar Pirates, you'd better fight with everything you've got. Anyone who takes one of them down will earn a bounty of one hundred gold coins!"
The mere mention of gold sent a wave of excitement through Garcia's crew. The promise of wealth was enough to make them reckless.
"Is that so? Then why not hand over the bounty right now?"
A voice cut through the commotion from behind.
Garcia turned sharply, his scowl deepening as he laid eyes on the figure clad in a black cloak. His voice dripped with venom. "Who the hell are you? Looking to make an enemy of the Evil Tooth Pirates?"
"If you see it that way, sure," Leone replied, a smirk forming on his lips. "But I'd rather you remember me as 'Shinigami.'"
That was the name he had chosen—the one that would strike fear into the hearts of every pirate who crossed his path. Wherever he roamed, death would follow, and every sinner of the sea would meet their fate beneath his blade.
"Tch. I don't care what stupid name you go by. Kill him! I want his head feeding the dogs!" Garcia bellowed.
His men needed no further orders. Swords were drawn, and they lunged at Leone in unison.
"I'm not interested in small fry."
Leone's words were cut short as his figure suddenly vanished. In an instant, a golden glow flickered behind Garcia, his foot already raised.
"…I'm only interested in you!"
Light-Speed Kick!
With a thunderous impact, Garcia's body was sent flying, a streak of golden energy trailing behind him. He crashed into the wall, obliterating it on impact, debris scattering in all directions.
Leone exhaled in satisfaction, lowering his leg.
"Finally, the real power of the Light-Speed Kick comes into play."
This time, his light-speed kick fully replicated the initial effect of Kizaru's attack. Upon impact, a laser mark appeared on the target, triggering a secondary explosion and unleashing even greater destructive force.
"With more practice, I believe reaching Kizaru's level won't be impossible."
"Boss!"
His subordinates turned in alarm at the commotion behind them, only to see Garcia—his body grotesquely contorted from the kick—convulsing, foaming at the mouth. They gasped in shock.
"As for you guys... damn pests."
Leone flicked his fingers rapidly, unleashing a barrage of laser beams. In an instant, over ten beams shot forth, piercing through the heads of Garcia's men.
Blood spurted from the holes between their brows. Their bodies collapsed lifelessly to the ground.
Having taken care of the trash, Leone didn't even bother looking at them.
The violent spectacle sent a ripple of fear through the street. Vendors and bystanders scrambled in all directions, terrified of getting caught in the chaos.
Fighting and killing were nothing new on Pirate Street. If someone got caught in the crossfire, they'd simply die in vain. Even the Goa Kingdom's authorities didn't bother intervening—this was a lawless zone.
"You're next… I wonder what Devil Fruit fragments will drop from you?"
Leone stomped Garcia's head mercilessly, all for the sake of collecting Devil Fruit fragments.
After extensive testing, he had figured out the pattern:
To extract Devil Fruit fragments, one had to beat their opponent down.
And the stronger the target, the higher the drop rate.
That was why Leone actively hunted bounty pirates—not just for the thrill, but to farm Devil Fruit fragments from them!
"It's time to see the results!"
Leone closed in on Garcia, whose body was still twitching uncontrollably.
He showed no mercy.
Lightspeed Barrage!
Bang bang bang—!!
Thousands of punches rained down in the span of a second, striking Garcia's body relentlessly. Bones shattered one after another under the sheer force.
Had all the punches been concentrated in a single spot, Garcia would have been obliterated instantly.
Ding! Congratulations, you have obtained a 'Goro Goro no Mi' (Thunder Fruit) fragment!
Ding! Congratulations, you have obtained a 'Goro Goro no Mi' (Thunder Fruit) fragment!
Ding! Congratulations, you have obtained a 'Goro Goro no Mi' (Thunder Fruit) fragment!
The system's electronic notification sounded off repeatedly, like a stuck record.
"Thunder Fruit?! Another Logia! Hell yeah!"
Leone's eyes lit up with excitement.
Before arriving here, he had thought about this scenario countless times.
If he acquired a useless Zoan fruit, he'd sell it for a high price and exchange it for money.
If it was a Paramecia fruit, he'd decide whether to sell or keep it based on its abilities.
But a Logia? No question about it—he'd use it himself!
In his ultimate plan, if he could collect all Logia-type Devil Fruits, he would wield the full power of nature itself, capable of reshaping the world at will. How terrifying would that be?
Of course, Leone wouldn't let such an opportunity slip away!
The Goro Goro no Mi was one of the most overpowered Logia fruits in existence. In the hands of Enel, it had granted him god-like power, putting him on par with an Admiral and even making him capable of defeating one.
If it weren't for Luffy's Gomu Gomu no Mi, which directly countered electricity, Enel could have easily risen to the rank of a Yonko.
And now, that same terrifying fruit had fallen into Leone's hands.
"Goro Goro no Mi... here I come!"
