Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Exposing Doflamingo’s Scheme
"Let me guess," Noah said, thoughtful.
"You're here to buy time for the Beasts Pirates, aren't you?
After all, with all those business deals you have with Kaido,
if something happened to him, half your empire would collapse."
He spoke calmly, as if stating the obvious.
Noah knew all too well what kind of man Doflamingo was.
Someone who didn't care about the New World's affairs.
Even if a Yonko died, Doflamingo would pop champagne and celebrate.
And now, as Noah and Kizaru moved against Kaido,
here he was, standing in their way.
Of course it was about his business.
"How scary," Kizaru said, narrowing his eyes.
"Who'd have thought Doflamingo had such influence—
working with a Yonko?"
The whole point of the Warlords was to counterbalance the Four Emperors.
But now a Warlord was using Marine privileges to partner up with a Yonko?
It was a slap in the face to the Navy.
In the past, Kizaru had been too lazy to care.
He barely glanced at reports, only paying attention if Sengoku brought it up.
Otherwise, Kizaru knew nothing and asked nothing.
That was just how he operated.
"Vice Admiral Noah, you're joking, right?"
Doflamingo forced a laugh as he felt Kizaru's gaze.
He knew Kizaru usually didn't meddle.
But he hadn't expected to run into someone like Noah—
a troublemaker who'd stir the pot.
If it got out that he'd been dealing with a Yonko,
even his ties to the World Government wouldn't save him.
After all, his Warlord seat wasn't handed to him on a silver platter.
He'd fought for it with his own two hands.
And right now, the Marines were the strongest force on the seas.
"What a pain," Kizaru muttered.
"Don't do anything stupid."
He chuckled lazily, clearly not planning to push the issue.
Kizaru knew exactly what kind of man Doflamingo was.
His words meant nothing.
But Kizaru was inclined to believe Noah.
Whether he'd actually report this to HQ?
That was another matter.
Reporting a Warlord wasn't easy.
Gathering evidence alone would be a nightmare.
"Of course, I'm a Warlord of the Sea!
Naturally, I stand with the Navy first,"
Doflamingo said stiffly, forcing a smile.
That was a warning from Kizaru—
the lazy Admiral might not care much,
but he'd act if ordered.
And Doflamingo wasn't about to push his luck.
"That's good. Noah, looks like you were worried for nothing,"
Kizaru said, glancing at him.
It was fair for Noah to be cautious.
You couldn't trust pirates like Doflamingo.
"Let's hope so."
Noah turned to Hina.
"Hina, get our Warlord friend a small stool."
He couldn't help thinking—why glare at the man?
You've got weapons.
If you're that mad, go cut him down.
With me and Kizaru backing you, what's there to fear?
"Yes, sir."
Hina chose not to attack.
Doflamingo was still a Warlord recognized by the Navy.
If she made a move and it sparked a backlash,
she'd be blamed for it all.
So she fetched a tiny stool,
barely higher than sitting on the deck itself.
Doflamingo twitched, eyeing the stool,
then his slim-cut pants, then his long legs.
Was he supposed to fit on that?
"Fufufufu, no need.
I just happened to be passing by and wanted to say hello.
How about dropping by my turf for a drink?"
He wiped his brow, cold sweat trickling down.
It felt like he'd brushed past death.
He wasn't about to provoke Noah,
a Marine figurehead.
That would be suicide.
"No thanks. We're busy.
Just go home and don't give us a reason to be annoyed,"
Noah said quietly.
He wasn't interested in Doflamingo's games.
That man's turf?
Noah could imagine it—
one misstep and you'd be turned into a toy.
No thanks.
"Such a pity,"
Doflamingo said, forcing himself to stay polite.
"Then I'll take my leave."
These two were too strange.
Not like Akainu with his overwhelming aggression.
These two didn't even look at him properly,
and that made them harder to deal with.
Like punching cotton—
no feedback, no way to read them.
He couldn't even guess what they were thinking.
As Doflamingo prepared to leave,
two Marines came running up,
faces pale with urgency.
"Captain Hina! Another pirate ship just appeared!"
one of them reported breathlessly.
