Chapter 12: 11 - Escape from Loguetown
11 - Escape from Loguetown
—You were with that beautiful lady, right? So jealous! I mean... Get out of my way! I need to find my captain! —said Sanji, looking at Zoro with annoyance. He didn't know why, but the more he looked at him, the more irritated he became, especially knowing that he could follow such a beautiful woman like Kara, even though he didn't know her. According to Luffy, she was his older sister.
—Then how about you defeat me first? —said Zoro with a grin as he drew two swords—. Then I'll let you go.
—Tsk. So be it —Sanji replied, launching himself at Zoro with a kick aimed at his face.
Zoro easily dodged the attack and, in a swift movement, struck Sanji's face with the hilt of his sword.
The impact sent him flying several meters back, his nose starting to bleed. However, Sanji stabilized himself in the air and landed on his feet, crouching.
—Damn... —he muttered, touching his nose and seeing the blood dripping—. I guess I'll have to get more serious then.
He jumped into the air, spun several times, and came down with an axe kick aimed directly at Zoro's head.
Zoro raised his swords and blocked the attack, using the strength of his arms to push him back up.
Taking advantage of Sanji being in the air, Zoro moved forward and struck his face once more with the hilt of his sword.
—Aah! Damn you, moss head! —Sanji shouted angrily, falling to the ground again with pain in his nose.
Their fight continued for a while, with Zoro hitting Sanji's face with the hilt of his sword every time he counterattacked.
—Weren't you going to get serious? —Zoro said mockingly, watching Sanji kneeling on the ground, holding his aching face.
That only made Sanji stand up again, growing more furious with each attack, shouting:
—Damn you!
Meanwhile, Tashigi had lost sight of Zoro, so she ran through the streets, looking around to find him.
—Hurry, Captain Luffy! We need to get to the ship! —said Gin, following Luffy.
—You two, stop! You're under arrest! —exclaimed Tashigi, standing in front of Luffy and Gin.
—Captain Luffy, leave this to me —said Gin, taking out his two tonfas with spheres at the tips and adopting a combat stance—. Sorry, ma'am, but we have to go.
Without hesitation, he lunged at Tashigi with both tonfas.
She reacted immediately, drawing her sword, dodging the attack, and striking the back of Gin's neck with the hilt of her weapon, attempting to knock him out.
But Gin quickly lowered his head and retreated.
He looked at Tashigi with some surprise. That strike had almost hit him.
Without wasting time, he attacked again with one of his tonfas, but Tashigi sidestepped and countered with an upward slash, forcing Gin to defend himself with his weapon.
—Tsk. This is going to be more complicated than I thought —Gin said, looking seriously at the woman in front of him.
He decided to attack with greater determination to knock her out and escape before encountering Smoker.
Tashigi dodged his attack while moving closer. In response, Gin unleashed a flurry of quick strikes.
Although Tashigi still hadn't fully mastered Observation Haki, her training with Kara had greatly improved her reflexes, allowing her to easily evade all of Gin's attacks. She knew that if even one of those blows landed, she'd be out of the fight.
The problem was that Gin also had great reflexes, and Luffy was standing nearby, forcing her to keep him in her field of vision.
Both were at a stalemate: Tashigi couldn't cut Gin, and Gin couldn't land a hit on her.
However, the difference in stamina became clear over time. Tashigi began to slow down rapidly, allowing Gin to finally land a strike that sent her flying several meters back.
Though she defended with her sword, she felt the impact and fell to her knees.
Wasting no more time, Gin ran off with Luffy to escape.
—Sigh… Looks like I still need more training —Tashigi said, getting up from the ground, adjusting her breathing, and massaging her hands.
She no longer held the foolish idea that, just because she was a woman, she was weaker than men. Now she knew that if she wanted to reach the best, she had to put in the proper effort. And if men were stronger, she simply had to train harder to surpass them.
Meanwhile, as Luffy and Gin fled, they encountered Smoker, who easily stopped them.
They couldn't fight back. They couldn't hit smoke.
And just as Smoker was about to knock Luffy out, Dragon appeared to stop him, while a great gust of wind helped all the Straw Hats get closer to their ship.
Even Sanji, with his face covered in blood and burning with rage, obeyed Luffy's order to board immediately and leave.
—Damn moss head, you'll pay for this! —Sanji growled, using a handkerchief to wipe his bruised and swollen face.
Meanwhile, already aboard, Gin couldn't stop thinking about what had happened.
—I… was defeated so easily —he said, depressed, recalling how he couldn't do anything against Smoker and how he had ended up in a stalemate with the marine woman.
—This isn't the time for regrets! Let's take advantage of the wind being on our side! —Nami shouted as she gave orders to steer the ship.
—Yeah! —everyone responded, taking their positions.
Elsewhere in the city, Zoro clicked his tongue.
—Tsk. Swirly eyebrows got away… —he muttered as he turned around to head back to the base.
—Ah, Zoro! You were here? Where did you go? —Tashigi asked upon seeing him.
—Beating up a pervert —Zoro answered calmly.
—A pervert?... Never mind, let's head back. Mr. Smoker said we'll be joining you on your ship —Tashigi quickly said—. By the way, where is Miss Kara?
—Here I am —Kara replied, dropping from the sky with an annoyed expression.
—Why don't you have a shirt? —Tashigi asked, noticing that Kara was wearing a black bikini top, unconcernedly showing off her figure.
That also revealed a black tattoo or insignia on the left side of her abdomen, which she didn't recognize.
—Some cheaters got it dirty —Kara said as she pulled out a new shirt from who knows where and began putting it on casually. After all, she had a bikini underneath, and her sister used to walk around like that in the past. To her, it was nothing compared to other crazies… and that exhibitionist blonde.
—Alright, let's get back before Smoker starts complaining about our delay —Kara said, leading the way to the dock.
There, the ship that Zoro and Kara would use to return to Marineford was already prepared to set sail.
—Yeah —Tashigi nodded, following them along with Zoro.
Meanwhile, on a ship quickly sailing away from Loguetown undetected…
—Damn… that woman is a monster —Belo Betty muttered, lying on the ship's floor, breathing heavily.
Around her, her comrades were in various states, some more injured than others. To be honest, only she and Koala were relatively fine, as they hadn't taken too many hits.
But Sabo's head was completely swollen and misshapen, while Hack was unconscious.
—My arm! My arm! —Karasu cried out as he tried to regenerate it with his ability.
—Calm down, it's her ability, it's only temporary —Sabo said to reassure him—. When she fought Akainu, she did the same thing.
Karasu couldn't regenerate his arm.
—She was just playing with us the whole time… —Sabo continued with a wry smile—. Luckily, we didn't face her at her most violent.
He said the last part with a hint of sadness in his voice, as if remembering something.
—Are you talking about the Willhill massacre? —Belo Betty asked as she lit a cigarette.
—What's that? —Koala asked, intrigued.
—It was one of the most violent and unexpected destructions caused by Kara's fury —an unexpected voice responded.
Everyone turned and saw Dragon standing among them.
—Mr. Dragon! —they quickly greeted.
—Destruction? But she didn't seem like a bad person… —Koala said, somewhat confused.
—She isn't —Dragon denied—. No innocent people were harmed that day. Everyone who died was guilty.
He paused before continuing:
—It was also the day her name started to be feared even among her own comrades.
—Her own comrades? —Koala asked.
—Yes. A naval base, as well as an entire island, were reduced to dust. The only thing left when the Marines arrived was a plain… and in the center of it, Kara, sitting on the ground, her body completely covered in dust. At her feet, the proof of what had happened there —Dragon said, recalling the scene.
—Proof? —Belo Betty asked, interested. Although she had some idea of what had happened, she had never heard the full story.
—I don't want Kara to be like that again —Sabo said, his face dark—. Every time she came to visit us, it was like she was suffering. All she had was anger and loneliness. As her younger brothers, it broke our hearts to see her like that.
Though she never showed her violent side in front of them, they could feel how close she was to being consumed by it.
—Can I know what happened? —Koala asked.
—To be continued…
