Chapter 624: A Hartoum winter.
It was winter but Hartoum was extremely cold, while the neighboring towns shivered under frost, Hartoum breathed winter like a living thing. It was one of the coldest places in Fog country. Unfounded rumors about the extreme winter in Hartoum had been circulating for years.
Some stories claimed that the town was home to a group of people that sold their souls to an ice demon for immortality. In turn, the demon cursed Hartoum locking it in a fierce frost all through winter.
Others said that long ago, an ancient warlock had traveled through the town a cold winter's night. When the town folk refused to offer him shelter, he cursed them to suffer bitter winters before vanishing into the snow.
The most widespread rumor was that beneath the town lay a temple of an ancient deity-the Frost keeper. It was one time a guardian of Hartoum but the people betrayed it, so it sentenced the town to bitter winters in vengeance.
None of the stories had ever been confirmed to be true but every year, winter in Hartoum grew stronger and winter migrants doubled in number.
Inside Gecko's temple, it was warmer than the rest of the town. Enchanted fires burned in many fireplaces and torches on the walls.
Rufus stopped by an altar where sage was burning, he reached into the fire with his bare hands and sniffed it. His face twisted in disgust. "The sage does not smell right; this place is infested with evil. It is probably why the temperatures have dropped so drastically. A curse of unending cold has been spread through the town. For what purpose, I have no idea." He instructed the hunters to surround the shrine.
From where they were, they could hear chanting, bells ringing and drums beating_then they ceased all of a sudden.
"They know that we are here." Star warned.
"Good, I like it when they run." She answered.
Gecko's temple was not as big as major temples in the country, but it was filled with traps like a house of horrors. Rufus was relieved that he and Phoebe had sealed off the temple so that nothing could escape because by the time they survived the traps and illusions, morning was knocking on the windows.
"We are getting closer; everyone should continue moving forward!" Rufus told the everyone using sign language.
They were about to enter the main body of the temple, a hidden sanctuary where Gecko was hiding when a legion of demons attacked them from the shadows.
"Demons!!" A hunter notified the others who wasted no time in firing their weapons. With every single precise shot taken, a demon fell to the ground. Edward was not even using a gun; he was just decapitating them like an executioner.
Orson froze some of them with a spell which made it easier to pick them off. One by one the demons fell and were sent back to hell. As the hunters faced that battle, others stormed into the hidden sanctuary.
Inside were humans holding weapons in their hand's knives, guns, shovels, tree branches, ropes, name it. These weapons were aimed at Rufus and his group.
"We will fight and seek to revive our master until our dying breath." A mans shout cut through the tension, sharp with conviction. "Do not be afraid, it is the pregnant heifer that we were told to kill. Remember that whoever gets rid of her will get to serve our master Ravana personally." To show that he meant what he had just said, he cocked the gun which was aimed at Phoebe and shot.
The bullet hung in the air for a while, then slowly twisted mid flight, streaking back toward the gun man who shuddered and began to say prayers to Ravana to save him.
The people in the temple had no magic, they were believers that had simply done a lot of evil on behalf of the demons and Ravana.
"She will not save any of you, in fact if anything Ravana will take you to hell with her." Phoebe said. Then she flashed them, a taunting smile covering her lips as she commanded the bullet to drop to the floor. "When I destroy her and mark my words, I will destroy her." She completed the sentence, adding a mocking laugh to it.
The believers, seething at her scorn, surged forward with their weapons raised and fury in their eyes. "Die you wicked creation of nature! Ravana wants to create a better world for us, and you do not want that because you founding families are rich folks..."
Phoebe waved her hand over them, putting them to sleep for thirty-six hours. "I have heard enough, is this the gospel that Ravana is preaching? That I am evil and is the good one? Why am I even in this?" She let out a disbelieving laugh.
Was the demon network so good that they had already been informed that she was the grand guardian? Or was this simply because she was from the founding families so that made her wicked?
The hunters that were outside joined those on the inside after winning their battle against the demons. "Have you found him?" Nile asked, a quizzical gaze fixed on the group that was sleeping on the floor.
Shaking her head, Rekha let out a heavy sigh. "He is not here...."
"He is." Phoebe threw in.
Star had already confirmed this to her. Phoebe twisted her wrists effortlessly, energy from her hands was channeled into a painting of a six eyed deity hanging on the wall. The wall trembled, groaned and then separated, presenting a hidden tunnel.
"That fucking gecko." Maureen muttered.
Andre who had taken extra shots of a courage potion that Phoebe gave him took a deep breath and check on the camera button on his shirt. He clenched his hands around the guns in his hands. He was ready to see where the tunnel led.
"He went through there; this pathway leads to the Satin mountains and that fool has the items with him. Follow me, we get to kill two birds with one stone." Phoebe giggled, leading the way.
David run in front of her. " I will be at the front just in case of anything." He shoved her behind him protectively, not just the Mayfair and the Saxons did the same. Positioning Phoebe at the center. Everyone wanted to protect the guardian, wife or sister.
As they pressed through the cramped passage at high speed aided by a floating spell [Levitas], a swarm of vampire bats descended upon them in fury of wings and shrieks. Unlike the normal nocturnal creatures, these were big with sharp teeth that released a venomous poison.
They released their spell-forged shields, the bats vanished upon brushing against the shields. After all the bats vanished, they realized that they had come to the end of the tunnel and were standing in an empty room. No Gecko and no relics!!
All the people that were there knew that Gecko was playing a trick, if the grand guardian said he was there then he was.
"It is over Gecko; it is better to surrender and tell us what you know about everything Azur is planning then we will give you a fair trial or you can die here." Phoebe's voice echoed in the tunnel, giving him options.
