Chapter 121: Dungeons
"Dungeons!"
*BAM!*
In the lecture hall, our teacher, Luna — The woman whose heart wasn't pounding — slammed the table to get our attention.
"Does she have something in her head?" Zephyr muttered, his eyes twitching as he glared at her.
We were still on Saturday, attending a general lecture that didn't have anything to do with the professions.
And after awakening my vampiric blood, I noticed something about this teacher, something other than her strange heart…
'She doesn't even have blood.'
I would have assumed she was a corpse if not for her breathing and the heat of her body.
"Ahem," Luna cleared her throat, looking excited as he continued, "You have always heard about them, right? Today, I'll explain to you everything you need to know about them!"
The screen behind her changed, showing the picture of 3 white crack lines in the very fabric of space.
"What you are looking at now is a Tier-3 dungeon. And as you can guess by this picture, the dungeon's Tier can be determined by seeing the number of crack lines and, if you are experienced, by sensing the mana it's absorbing!"
The students looked at her with confusion, whispering to each other and talking about why would anyone use the second method?
"Look there if you don't understand."
Luna simply pointed in a direction, and when we followed it, we saw Nyxis hugging Limitless's arm tightly.
"...."
We stared at them silently as Limitless's face turned red. And unlike him, Nyxis didn't seem embarrassed at all.
Did she want us to just look at that fucking couple?!
"What are we supposed to… look at?"
Someone asked loudly, then Luna answered immediately, trying to hide her embarrassment.
"Haha… cough… she is blind. Not all people have… sight. You don't want to end up in a higher tier dungeon by accident because you can't see, right?"
We nodded in understanding — there were many different situations when a person wouldn't be able to see before them. Having a sensory alternative to know a dungeon tier could be critical.
"Anyway, once you touch this crack, you will get teleported into a hidden space, where the only way to get out most of the time is by shattering the dungeon core!"
Her expression suddenly turned serious, looking at us firmly.
"Trapped inside a hidden space, where no help could find you, where hundreds or even thousands of monsters want to kill you, where the dungeon itself is unpredictable and could have an extreme environment to slowly kill you, where even your friends inside could betray and kill you, because there, there is no one to see it."
*Gulp!*
Some students gulped nervously, including Elara and Cel.
After pausing for a moment, Luna continued:
"Thus, even though we aren't stopping you from entering dungeons, we aren't recommending it especially for first year! Your ranking won't matter if you ended up in a dungeon that could directly counter all your powers!"
"For that, we also recommend you to have a capable team with different abilities. Even an Artificer could solve a puzzle inside and save all your lives. Always expect the worst. The dungeon rewards won't matter if you die inside."
As the silence lingered, I began to think about who would be enough to enter a dungeon with me.
I had the power of radiation, burning, teleporting, space manipulating, blood manipulating, shocking, cutting, air walking, and many more.
And with Glutton, who was learning about swordmanship, I was an all-rounder.
Thinking about those who I know, my mind fixed on Liora, Elara, Limitless and Zephyr.
Those were the only students I knew who could actually help me significantly. Everyone else didn't add anything new.
Selene and Arthur were strong, but they wouldn't add anything more than that in a dungeon with me specifically.
Luna's expression returned to the carefree one as she smiled.
"So, what are the rewards you get from dungeons? Why would anyone risk their lives just to finish one? Why would we allow such dangerous phenomena to be accessed by even first year students?"
She raised 4 fingers and began to lower them one after the other.
"First, the resources! The dungeons tend to contain rare resources which are hard to find in normal environments. Let them be mana and aura crystals, the rare minerals, the legendary herbs, and items found in special dungeons like mansions and many more!"
As she lowered the second finger, a shining blue card materialized in front of her. Our eyes widened as we realized what it was.
"Second, the famous skill cards! The magical cards that could give you direct knowledge about spells! There are many ways to get them in dungeons, but the most famous one is getting them as a reward after shattering the dungeon core!"
She leaned closer to the table, hand beside her mouth and whispered with a voice loud only enough to let all of us hear.
"And recently, we discovered the existence of entire skill books! You remember them, right?"
My mind drifted instantly to the skill book that Yami used in the land of challenges. Aria and I weren't the only people who got it. Everyone knew about the skill books' existence.
Lowering her third finger, the card in front of Luna was replaced by a strange crystallized heart.
She looked at the heart deeply, suspiciously more than she should, then spoke.
"Third, the dungeons' relics… They can be found the same way as the skill cards. Think about them like special types of strange artifacts without runes inscribed on them. Additionally, their appearance doesn't show their use.
She then clenched the heart with one hand.
"And as you can see, this heart is a relic. It isn't a sword, armor, scroll or even a slab. Just by looking at it, you can't know its real usage."
All of a sudden, the heart turned into red energy and entered her chest, leaving us to look at her in daze.
A soft, or maybe sad smile tugged at her face as she continued:
"Some relics have stupid abilities that wouldn't help in any situation, but other relics like the heart you have just seen may save your lives."
Suddenly, before anyone could react, a silver knife materialized in her hand which she used to cut her own hand.
"What the hell!"
"Is she possessed?!"
A strange pressure suddenly stopped each one that tried to stand up. While some students were panicking, I watched calmly as she returned her hand and began to move it while laughing playfully.
"Tadaa! It's back like new!"
Everyone calmed down as they let her continue.
Luna's soft smile returned.
"The only reason I'm not dead is the relic I have just shown. It was… a gift from a friend. A single relic he found in a random dungeon was the reason I'm still standing here…"
Her face froze for a long moment.
'Is that friend dead?'
[Maybe that was originally used on him to keep him alive. That would make it worse.]
Luna shook her head then her normal smile returned as she lowered her last finger.
"Fourth, the knowledge! The dungeons may show ancient civilization, ruins, mansions and so on. So any knowledge that type of dungeons possesses may be unknown to us, therefore too valuable! If you ever stumbled upon such knowledge, remember that you will get highly rewarded for it."
As she finished her talking, she stood up and spoke as she slowly walked away.
"Last thing for this lecture. If you want to test yourself inside a dungeon, then go to one of the academy's special dungeons. They cost so many coins, but they are safer than the wild dungeons. Stay cautious and don't risk your life!"
As she left the hall, I was left with more questions.
'What are the dungeons?'
They contained magical items, ancient knowledge, and sometimes, entire civilizations.
Were those cracks actually gates to forgotten worlds, or did they hold a deeper meaning?
Unfortunately, I didn't have the ability to know their secrets.
Not yet at least.
•••
Sitting in the library while scratching Selene's cold hair — I was focusing on reading a history book I found.
The more I read through it, the wider my jaw opened.
It was a book that described a large fight that happened 18 years ago.
The falling of Sin of Oblivion, the Void Demon and one of the strongest demons in existence, Letheus.
The reason behind his titles was his affinity, the void affinity.
It was the opposite of space, turning anything into real emptiness where it would be erased and become oblivion from existence itself.
18 years ago, there was an alliance made to trap and kill him. Among those who fought that demon were:
Lunara Solen: the real counter of the demon's affinity.
Julius Sunblade: Arthur's grandfather, the former human king and the holder of Time affinity.
Kyle Lunaris: the one man's army with his illusions.
Crimson Bloodborne: who was called the immortal cockroach for some reason.
Umbrion Stormblade: Zephyr's father, the current elf king, the first holder of Eclipse affinity and the mages' strongest counter.
There were many other famous names who participated in that fight against only one demon, reaching around 34 fighters against only one man.
The problem was the conclusion of the fight.
Letheus died.
And among 34 fighters — 28 of them were never found again.
