Chapter 3: Training Shenanigans
-6 Years Later-
The past few years, I've been focusing on training my quirk, and I've got to say—I think I'm pretty good at using it now. There's still no sign of Observation or Armament Haki, so that's a negative, but at least I managed to recreate most of Katakuri's attacks.
Ryuko actually got her quirk two months after mine, and that was a sight to see. A small dragon suddenly spawned out of nowhere, and everybody started screaming and running around. After that, she and I convinced our parents to take us to a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu dojo. It would help me if opponents got up close, where I could use takedowns and cover them in mochi.
I earned my green belt within two years of joining the dojo, and Ryuko got her orange belt in the same amount of time. Right now, we're about to spar, and hopefully, one of us will earn our black belt after this.
-Timeskip no Jutsu-
I bounced lightly on the balls of my feet, staring across the mat at Ryuko. She looked like she always did—calm and humble. I still have no idea how a ten-year-old can look that composed with a quirk like hers.
We weren't allowed to use our quirks during spars, but we usually fought after school with them. I almost always won those fights—being a massive dragon against a large amount of sticky mochi doesn't go too well.
Anyway, I waited for Sensei to start the match. After a few seconds, he gave a nod and waved his hand down.
"Hajime!"
Ryuko shot in fast, her hands latching onto my sleeve and lapel. She yanked hard, trying to break my balance. I staggered back, but I wasn't about to let her dictate the match. I gripped her gi just as tightly, planting my feet and pulling her toward me. She moved with it, suddenly shifting her weight and sweeping my leg with her foot.
My back hit the mat before I even realized what had happened.
I exhaled sharply, my instincts kicking in. Before Ryuko could settle into side control, I bridged hard, twisting my hips to shrimp out. She reached for my head, but I jammed my forearm against her, creating just enough space to slip my knee inside and reset my guard.
Ryuko groaned. "How did you do that?"
I smirked. "I'm just him, I guess."
She tried to break through my defense, but I was ready. The moment she leaned in, I shot my legs up and locked them around her waist. She stiffened—realizing too late what was coming. I yanked her arm forward and swung my hips, setting up a triangle choke.
Ryuko struggled, twisting her body to escape. I squeezed harder, but she was already posturing up, breaking my control. Before she could completely slip out, I adjusted—switching to an armbar.
"Not happening!" she growled, rolling hard to stack me.
I abandoned the attack before she could crush me, spinning to recover my position. We scrambled, both trying to gain control. She lunged for a sweep, but I saw it coming. I sprawled, pinning her back to the mat.
Now I had the upper hand. I passed her guard quickly, moving into side control. She bucked hard, trying to escape, but I stayed heavy. Sliding my knee across her stomach, I took mount.
"Ugh," she muttered, struggling beneath me.
I hooked her arm, shifting into an S-mount. She thrashed, but I tightened my grip, isolating her arm. With a quick motion, I leaned back and extended her elbow.
"I yield!" Ryuko slapped the mat, tiredness in her voice. I released her immediately and sat back, breathing hard. She was actually really talented at fighting—probably one of the reasons she managed to get into the top ten Pro Heroes.
Sensei Kuroda turned to us. "Well done," he said, looking between us. "That was a strong match. You both showed patience and good technique." I nodded silently, still catching my breath. Ryuko smiled, dipping her head in appreciation.
"Tatsuma," Sensei continued, turning to her. "Your sweep was well-timed, and you transitioned quickly, but you need to settle your weight more before attacking. When you moved to mount, you gave Shiramochi just enough space to escape."
She listened carefully, nodding. "I see. I should have stabilized first before thinking about submissions." I could tell she looked a little disappointed, but I knew she'd be fine.
"Exactly," Sensei said with a small smile. "Speed is a good tool, but control is what makes it effective. When you get top position, take a moment to feel your opponent's movement. Stay heavy, adjust, and then attack when the opportunity is right."
Ryuko nodded again. "I understand. I'll work on that."
Sensei turned to me next. "Shiramochi, you stayed composed, which is good. You didn't rush your escapes, and your transitions were efficient. Your patience paid off."
I lowered my gaze slightly and nodded. "Thank you, Sensei."
"But," he added, "be careful not to rely too much on countering. You have good awareness, but sometimes taking the initiative can put you in an even stronger position." I thought about that for a moment, then gave another small nod. "I'll try."
Sensei studied us both for a moment, then gave a satisfied nod. "Good. Bow to each other." Ryuko and I turned to face each other and bowed deeply.
"Alright, that's all for today. You can wait in the front room for your parents to arrive."
Sensei then walked over to some other kids to give reviews of their fights as well. Ryuko and I walked toward the entrance, chatting about whether we would get our black belts.
"Do you think we did well enough for Sensei to give us both black belts?" she asked, sitting down in one of the chairs. I slumped down in another chair, yawning. "Maybe. I just wanna go home—I'm tired."
"Yeah, me too. I feel exhausted and hungry." After waiting a few minutes, our parents finally arrived and took us home. I was tired, but I decided I'd try out a few of my attacks on a wooden log in our backyard.
Once outside, I turned to the log, put my right arm behind me, and formed it into multiple whips before throwing them forward, wrapping them around the log.
"Tori Mochi!"
I pulled the log back with all my strength, whipped it behind me, then threw it over my head and slammed it into the ground.
"BOOM!!"
Dirt and rocks flew into the air. I shielded my eyes with my hand. After a few seconds, the air cleared, and I saw that the log was split in two.
"Heh, that was amazing!"
I still can't get over the excitement I have for my power. Just that attack alone could knock out multiple opponents at once.
I know all of Katakuri's attacks from the anime and manga, but I think I can create a few new ones. Maybe something like a grenade? I could compress mochi into a tight ball, throw it, and release the compression near an enemy. In theory, it would explode outward, trapping everything in mochi.
I guess I can try it right now.
"Mochi Shuryūdan!"
I threw the mochi ball at the two split logs and released the compression. Mochi exploded everywhere, covering half the backyard.
"Woah! I can't even see the logs anymore. The ground's covered in three feet of mochi!"
"Man, I feel exhausted."
And just like that, I collapsed on the grass, surrounded by mochi. My parents were going to be pissed when they saw this. But I'd be fine, right?
