Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Core Area
Big news, absolutely big news!
The Furnace had finally declared war on the outside world!
Everyone knew that the Furnace would launch an external war every decade or so.
On one hand, it was to plunder resources, and on the other, it was to cull the apprentices and wizards within the Furnace.
The Furnace needed elite wizards and apprentices only the best of the best could stay and survive!
As for how to filter them out, of course, it was through war!
For black wizards, only those who survived the war could be considered elite and worthy of continuing to live in the Furnace!
When Lynn heard this news from Colin, his heart shook violently.
Even though he had been somewhat prepared after all, over the past two months, neither Sonya, Colin, his teacher, nor his enemy had come to see him, clearly indicating that something unusual had happened within the Furnace he still couldn't help but feel his teeth clench when he heard it directly from Colin.
War!
This was no trivial matter.
The Furnace's war was a declaration of war against external supernatural forces, against other wizard factions!
In such an environment, wizard apprentices were nothing more than soldiers in a mundane army, essentially cannon fodder.
An enemy wizard could casually cast a spell and wipe out a group of apprentices!
Only formal wizards could be considered generals on the battlefield, with the qualifications to survive such a war.
Of course, "qualifications" were just that after all, there had been precedents of formal wizards falling in the Furnace's wars.
After Colin finished speaking, his gaze remained fixed on Lynn's face, observing his reaction.
When he saw the shock in Lynn's pupils, he nodded in satisfaction.
But he also noticed that, despite the turmoil in Lynn's heart, he remained calm on the surface, maintaining a composed demeanor.
"You really can stay calm… Haha, as expected, I can't scare you…"
Colin chuckled and shook his head, a hint of admiration in his eyes.
"No matter when staying calm is the mark of a promising wizard. I have high hopes for you, Lynn."
Beside him, Sonya, with her hands on her hips, smiled softly. Although her face looked somewhat haggard, her smile at this moment carried a unique charm.
"Huh?"
Hearing the words of the two Third-Level Wizard Apprentices beside him, Lynn was instead a bit puzzled.
"Let me explain."
Sonya smiled gently and said in a soft voice,
"Although the Furnace has declared war on the outside, our potion garden is the safest. We're responsible for logistical support. Unless the Furnace is overrun by the enemy, we won't be involved in frontline combat. So, Lynn's safety isn't an issue."
Although Sonya's words were reassuring, the exhaustion on her face suggested that the potion garden wasn't as relaxed as it seemed on the surface.
While they didn't have to go to the battlefield themselves, as a logistical department, they still had to put in tremendous effort and work.
Compared to wizards on the front, those in the potion garden might be able to preserve their lives, but they couldn't afford to let their guard down.
"However, it seems Colin doesn't work in the potion garden…"
Lynn suddenly remembered something.
Unexpectedly, Colin laughed upon hearing this and shook his head nonchalantly:
"I resigned a few days ago. Today, I officially transferred to the potion garden."
"Deserting before the battle… Aren't you afraid of the Furnace punishing you…"
Lynn couldn't help but complain inwardly. Seeing Colin's shameless and even proud demeanor, he couldn't help but chuckle.
However, with the protection of Teacher Rosalind, Colin's safety wasn't a concern.
After a simple welcome ceremony for Colin, Lynn decided to start his vacation the next day and take the opportunity to visit the spell testing room.
According to the rules, each apprentice had two days of vacation per month, which they could choose freely.
Lynn planned to take two consecutive days off and use the time to visit the spell testing room Sonya had mentioned.
The Furnace was divided into multiple areas: the potion garden, the beast pen, the alchemy department, the living quarters…
But the spell testing room wasn't located in any of these areas. It was in the core area of the Furnace.
The core area was a tall tower, its structure towering high. The entrance to the first floor required swiping a personal identity badge to enter.
Just the toll to enter this area costs one point.
Lynn's two months of work had earned him a total of fifty points.
And just now, when he swiped his badge, one point was deducted, leaving him with forty-nine.
"This is why I don't like going out I can't afford to spend money. I might as well meditate in my dorm…"
Lynn muttered helplessly. He raised his hand and swiped his identity badge, watching the number drop from fifty to forty-nine, feeling a pang of regret.
Upon entering the tower, Lynn was stunned by its scale.
The tower was exceptionally tall. Looking up, it had over ten floors, each with a ceiling height of more than four meters. The area of each floor was also vast, giving a sense of awe.
As soon as he stepped inside, he was captivated by the architectural ingenuity and grandeur.
Although Lynn had experienced the awe of modern skyscrapers in his past life, this tower, built with wizardry, was completely different from the reinforced concrete structures of the modern world, giving him an unprecedented sense of impact.
"The spell testing room is on the first floor. Just head inside."
Lynn had looked at the map earlier and was now walking through the first-floor hall.
Although entering the core area of the Furnace required swiping a point, it wasn't as deserted as he had expected. Instead, there were quite a few people around.
Tall figures moved about, all wearing the standard Furnace robes.
Although Lynn was still young and hadn't fully developed, making him appear relatively small,
he was already a Second-Level Wizard Apprentice. The energy particles and aura he naturally exuded gave him a unique presence, and no one looked down on him because of his size.
"Here we are, the spell testing room!"
Upon entering the spell testing room, the first thing Lynn saw was a lobby that required swiping points to enter. Inside, it was subdivided into multiple rooms.
When Lynn walked into the lobby, he noticed that there were already quite a few people in line, and some rooms were already occupied. He would have to wait for a while before he could start his test.
"Could it be because of the Furnace's war? Is everyone here testing their combat power, checking for weaknesses, and preparing to bolster their strength to increase their chances of survival?"
Lynn speculated inwardly.
He walked to the nearest spell testing room, swiped his badge, and selected the most basic testing program.
The cost was twenty points per hour. After swiping, he just needed to wait patiently. His badge would notify him when it was his turn.
Although this world hadn't developed high technology, wizardry, in a way, already possessed technological characteristics, even surpassing conventional technology in some aspects.
Moreover, Lynn wasn't worried about being cut in line. After all, in this core area, even formal wizards wouldn't dare to casually interfere with others.
This was under the watchful eyes of the Lord of the Furnace. Anyone causing trouble here would be seeking their doom.
"Let's wait for a bit…"
Lynn muttered to himself, preparing to wait quietly when suddenly, a surprised voice called out from behind.
"Lynn!"
Lynn was slightly startled. He turned around and saw three figures approaching him.
Although he only recognized one of them, the familiar figure made his brow twitch.
It was the young man who had entered the Furnace with him and Remi during the trial. Lynn had some impression of him.
Beside the young man stood two tall figures, wearing heavy robes with hoods covering their faces, making their features impossible to discern.
Before Lynn could speak, one of the figures beside the young man pulled down his hood, a faint smile playing on his lips as he said:
"So you're Lynn, the one who killed my useless brother."
Hearing this, Lynn's pupils contracted sharply.
He quickly realized the man's identity and his expression darkened. He thought to himself:
"Riley Robert!"
