Chapter 30: TST [30]
Mr. Grant ripped a card from his Deck as if venting his emotions—but the moment he saw it, a smile crept across his face.
His Ancient Gear Deck still had a way to counter [Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder].
"I activate the Spell Card [Ancient Gear Workshop] from my hand!"
"Return 1 'Ancient Gear' monster from my Graveyard to my hand."
He retrieved [Ancient Gear Golem] from the Graveyard.
"Whoa! Ancient Gear Golem is back!"
"Mr. Grant wasted no time recovering from the wipe."
"But how many times can [ZEUS] use its effect? If Morgan can wipe again, summoning even three Golems won't help."
"It takes 2 Xyz Materials to activate. Morgan might still have one wipe left..."
On the field, Mr. Grant glanced at his hand. Of course, he had anticipated this. As a former pro, he'd be on guard for those kinds of effects.
And he had a plan.
"I activate the Field Spell Card [Geartown]!"
The scenery changed abruptly. Gigantic gears rose from the ground, hissing with steam, forming a bizarre mechanical cityscape.
The battleground of the Ancient Gear Golem.
Still, that wasn't his true target. Smirking, Grant revealed another card:
"I activate the Spell Card [Mystical Space Typhoon]!"
A fierce cyclone erupted on the field.
"Finally! A card I recognize!"
"That one's in my Deck, too. It's a great general-purpose backrow removal card."
"But it can only destroy one card. Morgan has two Set cards. Which will he choose?"
The crowd waited with bated breath. But then Grant surprised them all.
He pointed to the field with a grin.
"I target [Geartown]!"
Confused murmurs spread across the stands. Clearly, no one expected that.
"What the heck?! Why destroy your own card?!"
"Has he lost it? That look Morgan gave him earlier might've broken his brain… but I loved it."
"You're the one who's broken, bro."
Meanwhile, Milo had already guessed Grant's move—He was going for [Geartown]'s second effect.
As the cyclone tore through the gear-forged city, it collapsed with shrieking metal. [Geartown] was destroyed.
Exactly what Grant wanted.
"I activate [Geartown]'s effect!"
"When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard: Special Summon 1 'Ancient Gear' monster from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard."
After a brief shuffle, Grant pulled a card from his Deck, pinched it between two fingers, and slammed it onto the Duel Disk.
"I Special Summon [Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon] in Attack Position!"
[Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon] Level 9│EARTH│Machine│3000 ATK
An ancient mechanical dragon soared onto the field, its rusted wings jagged and scarred by time.
Seeing it, Morgan's eyes sharpened—a flicker of hesitation flashing through her amber irises.
She knew this card well. A staple of Ancient Gear Decks.
And it had a dangerous effect: when it attacks, your opponent cannot activate monster effects or Spells/Traps until the end of the Damage Step.
Which meant if Grant went straight into the Battle Phase, [ZEUS] wouldn't be able to activate its effect before damage.
With equal ATK, a forceful trade would eliminate [ZEUS]. And in Main Phase 2, he could summon something else. She'd lose her board wipe.
After weighing her options, Morgan made her move.
"Now, I activate [Divine Arsenal AA-ZEUS - Sky Thunder]'s effect!"
"Detach 2 Xyz Materials; send all other cards on the field to the Graveyard!"
[ZEUS] roared to life once more. Morgan's two Set cards and Grant's [Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon] were wiped from the field.
Despite that, Grant only grinned.
This was what he'd been waiting for—"Morgan, you walked right into it!"
"I Normal Summon [Ancient Gear Hunting Hound]!"
"Then I activate its effect: Send Fusion Materials listed on an 'Ancient Gear' Fusion Monster from my hand or field to the Graveyard, and Fusion Summon it from the Extra Deck."
"Come forth—[Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem]!"
